FW sized.

I understand John is going to change the names for all three to various species of raptor, instead of harmless flightless birds from New Zealand.

That probably makes a good deal of sense. :-p

Ooo, very swish!

I must say, though, the New Zealandish names were rather iconic. It's a pity there aren't more killer kiwis, or savage keas....

I suppose that leaves NZish names free for something else!

Most people thought the original names were made up and I wanted to move them away from association with the old models that had the tail fin breakage issue so thought new names that people would understand would be best on both counts.

No. It is a rubbish flightless parrot, whose mating call is so low in tone, the females find it impossible to work out which direction the males are calling from. Its instinctual behaviour when attacked is to freeze still , even when a predator is actively biting it.

It is a modern dodo, and deserves more recognition simply for how crap an animal it truly is.

A flightless parrot that has been known to forget it cannot fly, jumping off trees while flapping its useless wings, with fatal consequences?

Design by Loki, perhaps.

I got the irony, I just wanted the opportunity to tell another Kakapo Fact (tm).

Kakapos are generally green, or yellowish green, and are always rubbish.

Rubbish. Got you. I am starting to feel a strange affinity with these evolutionary dead-ends.

They must be truly excellent at something else to have survived so long! Moas and giant eagles didn't do much better (and neither did suspiciously-drop bear-like marsupial lions...).

Maybe keas make up for it?

These flyers are cool in a way that reminds me of keas....

as I understand it, NZ has been so remote for so long and without mammals, that pretty much every evolutionary niche that could be filled by a mammal has been filled by a bird, which was fine until the mammals were re-introduced and wanted their niches back.....
