Quote (primarch @ 19 2004 Feb.,23:08) | I always get confused between unique hits and just hits. I suppose the counter on the front page is just total hits? | Generally a hit is recorded as a request to a server, therefore a visitor visting one page with text and five images would count as six hits and one unique visit.
Tom, we definitely need better search access.
| The main problem with the netepic site is that it is dynamic which most search engines don't like. What I have done to ensure that I am top of Google (or thereabouts) is to ensure four things:
1. the filename has the keyword in 2. the page title has the keyword and then some 3. the actual page has the keyword within it 4. the page is linked to from a page you know is in the Google search database
For example, if my keyword is Primarch
filename: primarch.html page title: Everything you wanted to know about Primarch
Tom, you may want to create a series of static pages linked from and to the relevant pages within the netepic site containing the keywords.
I am going to try an experiment and create a netepic page on my website and see if I can get near the top of Google search for netepic, should take about a month.

Lol, the game is on - but owning NetEPIC.org gives us major bonus points in the ranking... the keyword being in the URL gives you massive bonus points.

Hi!
I tried this a few days ago and I agree with your finding.
Excuse my ignorance, but how exactly you get a higher rating for searches? What or to whom to you contact? Is there fees involved?
I probably asked Tom and other over the years, but the process seems anti-intuitive.

It is magic my dear friend, magic...
Actually there is no need to contact anyone and nor are there fees involved.
The key really is to understand how Google works and therefore you can manipulate what you put on a webage and that will throw it to the top of the Google rankings.
Frist thing I did was decide on a keyword, in this case netepic.
I created ?a webpage, netepic.html and gave it a page title of Netepic - Felix's Gaming Pages. It is important that the filename contains the keyword and that the page title contains more than just the keyword. It certainly helps to have netepic in the domain name, but is not essential as can be seen from the top ranked site for netepic.
The page was relatively simple, comprising of a logo (with ALT text) a picture and some text including the word netepic. It should be pointed out that I did not add any metadata to the page at all...
I uploaded the page to my website.
The key was then to link to it from a page I knew to be in the Google database, in this case my Epic40K Page.
I also linked from my netepic page to the netepic website.
Leave to simmer for two weeks.... and success!!
No fees, no contact required.

Hi!
Pretty inefficient system.
Then again thats why searches turn up so many wierd and useless things I guess.
Thanks for the enlightenment!

There are a range of other factors which will also affect ranking and that includes links and how often the search result is clicked.

Hi!
Has any company tried to commercialize search engines and set some sort of standard?

Yup, I think that you can rent ads out on google, but they cost a bomb and with the small number of EPIC related sites out there, we don't need too, we already perform V well.
I can if needed boost our results somewhat tho by following Jimbos very sensible advice.
