That's exactly what I was thinking about it!

If I was going to change it (and I don't think it's important), I'd say to lean him backwards too. You could also imagine that position allowing you to use your feet to control rotation of the gun.

He's going to be leaning back. Tilting the sails in may work - I'm playing with it today.

I'd also like to see, if possible, a shot of what the sails will look like reversed/upside down. I'm looking at using these as spaceships (especially if a "full hood" option like the early concept art becomes available) and I reckon having lower fin/sails will look neat for that.

I know it's perhaps a little late to comment on the gunner, but I think he looks a bit crammed up - almost like an old lady driving her car, sitting way to close to the steering wheel. Maybe a bit more laid back positioning would be possible - a more chopper like position.

Im in for the leaning backwards as well

Sails leaning in is better. Gunner would be better leaning back imho. Difficult to lift your head constantly and fire if hunched over...

Which looks best - pointing out, pointing in, or pointing up?

I think pointed out looks best, but maybe they could be modeled on a "ball joint" to let people tilt as they want?

Agreed on that. Ball joints would be perfect, as you could give some individuality to your formations.

Goodo for leaning backwards, works better than my suggestion. I just really disliked the static straight up position.

Ball and socket joints sound like the best idea. That way people can position them all in whichever position they prefer or can vary it on each as though they're steering in different directions. Try and make the ball join hidden as much as you can though.
