After really looking at the Slann when doing up some models for the Gold book, I decided to build my own True Slann force. ?Now I'd built it, off to battle we go. ?Originally slated to be against a Chaos force, my opponent subbed in his new 'Nids at the last minute.
Seeing I took photos and something resembling notes I figured I'd put a brief report up here.

My Army.

Easily the quickest and cheapest Epic army I've ever put together! ?Two Gravguard Companies, a Frog Mech Co., Razorfang Scout Titan and a Great Magus in a Bullfrog mech. ?Not many figures, horrible average CAF, but lots of firepower!

Up Against - Dom + 2 Exocrine and 2 Dactalis Broods, Heirophant and Stealers, Hive Queen + 2 Razorfex Broods and Hormagaunts, Hive Queen + 2 Trygons and Termagants in Mycetic Spores, Tyranid Warriors + Gargoyles and Lictors....I think that's about it. ?Heirophant with Bile Cannon, Ripper Tenticles and Razor Claw.

Board....terrain malfunction meant we were playing on a fairly bare field. ?I won the toss but was lazy and stayed where I was. ?I drew, O setup and then we saw the faceoff.

Turns 1 & 2

Turn 1, Initiative to the 'Nids, and a bog-load of Hive Mind Cards.

Lictors were waiting in ambush in the ruins just outside the Slann deployment area.

A Frog Mech detachment aided by the Great Magus warp jumped to claim the objective on the extreme left flank. ?Similarly, a Gravguard detachment on the far right charged forward to claim the objective in ruins there. ?The other units cautiously advanced or settled down to fire.

The Tyranids began a general charge across the field. ?The Gargoyles went into overdrive and charged the Mechs on the left flank. ?

The Heirophant doubled across the centre and Trygons and Razorfexes contested the Right flank.

First fire was largely uneventful, with only Hormagaunt and 2 Razorfexes knocked down. ?In the Close Combat phase bloodlusted, giant fanged Gargoyles killed 2 Frogs, though lost one of their own. ?Slann fire subsequently wiped out the Gargoyles, but the damage had been done. ?The scurrying Heirophant nailed the Razorfang with a Bile Cannon shot but the Slann titan shrugged it off. ?

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i106/ ... etitan.jpg

The Razorfang then returned fire, wounding the Heirophant and killing 2 Exocrines and 2 Dactalis. ?Neuro-Disruptor missiles fell all around the advancing bugs, but a Bio-Assassin sprang from nowhere and killed the command Frog Mech.

Slann 17 - Tyranids 0

Turn 2

Slann mostly settle down into First Fire, while the 'Nids rampage across the board. ?On the right flank the Gravguard detachment is overrun by both Trygons but only lose a stand.

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i106/ ... tflank.jpg

The Termagants also drop down on the defending battlesuits, but a number are killed still in their Mycetic spores.

In the centre the Heirophant charges the Gravguard and disgorged Genestealers.

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i106/ ... centre.jpg

The Razorfang opens up again, wounding the Dominatrix, and immolating 3 Dactalis and 3 Tyranid Warriors. ?A Hive Queen kills one Gravguard and the Dominatrix another 2. ?That detachment returns fire, killing 3 Exocrines. ?The engaged Slann open up on their attackers dropping many, but a number of battlesuits are ripped apart by the Tyranid Titan and its cargo.

Slann 28 - Tyranids 0

Turn 3

The Tyranid wave crashes over much of the Slann line. ?After it's entree of battlesuits, the Heirophant charges the Razorfang, if nothing else to stop if from decimating the Tyranid right flank. ?

The Gravguard on the right were hit by charges from Trygons, Razorfex and Hive Queens, while the Hormagaunts finally came to grips with the battlesuits guarding the Reactor. ?The Termagants also engage in the centre, though some Spores still haven't opened. ?The Lictors too charge.

The Slann battlesuit operators must have been stunned by the ferocity of the 'Nid charges because their shooting was generally wild. ?The Termagants and Hormagaunts were virtually wiped out, but many Gravguard were dragged down too, with the company on the right finally breaking. ?A bio-assassin ripped apart the Vanguard suit from the right company.

Despite receiving 2 wounds going in, the Heirphant easily bested the Razorfang in close combat and succeeded in damaging both the Conversion Cannon and the right leg of the Slann titan, though the later was quickly repaired.

Slann 29 - Tyranid 9

Turn 4

The Trygons and Razorfexes continued to roll up the Slann right flank, though the Gravguard in the centre were holding firm. ?In a fit of hive mind inspired madness the remaining Frog Mechs went on charge orders, and decided to assist the Razorfang in its' battle with the Tyranid titan. ?On the left, the surviving Tyranid Warriors went into Overdrive and stole back the objective there. ?Not to be outdone, the Great Magus warped jumped onto the objective previously guarded by the Lictors. ?A Hive Queen moved to take a shot at the Magus.

The 'Nid superheavies and knights scoured the right flank of Slann, but not without casualties as one of the giant snakes was finally put to death.

The Slann centre was still holding and the Lictors were hammered for leaving cover. ?The remainder of the Slann tried to knock out the Dominatrix, but by the end of the turn she still had a wound left....aaarghhhh! ?In the clash of the titans, the Heirophant used its rippers to tear apart the Frogs, but their sacrifice allowed the Razorfang to win the combat, though without causing serious damage to the rapidly regenerating mega-bug.

Slann 34 - Tyranid 27

Turn 5

The board was looking very bare. ?If the Tyranids could kill the last 2 Gravguard on the right and the last Frog, or just kill the Titan, they would cross the victory threshold. ?Many of the Tyranids were now reverting to instinctive orders too.

The Dominatrix charged the Gravguard in the bunker covering the reactor, while the last Frog mech withdrew behind the same, looking to exact revenge on the Tyranid bio-titan should the worst happen. ?A Hive Queen moved into the rubble to contest the objective just captured by the Magus. ?In a desperate move, the Magus made a warp jump to an objective deep within Tyranid territory......and emerged smack on target.

A bio assassin again killed one of my Vanguard suits just before it opened up on the remaining Lictors. ?The remaining Gravguard poured on the fire, knocking over Razorfexes, but not before the right company was totally annihilated. ?In the close combat for the bunker, the Dominatrix killed one stand, but the remaining battlesuit actually caused a wound in return! ?The Heirophant again bested the Slann titan, but thankfully the damage was again only minor (karma for my total inability to roll a critical I guess). ?In the final act of the battle, a single remaining Gravguard put 2 shots into the Hive Queen contesting the central objective, tearing it apart beyond any hope of regeneration, and winning the day for the Slann.

Slann 46 - Tyranid 36

Hey Gary,

Yup, your draft army cards are great.  I just subbed in some pics for the Frogs, Magus and Razorfang and sized them up slightly so they were the same size as the old SM2 ones.  Having cards for your units is a nice finishing touch I think.

My army suffered a lot because of its' low CAF.  Bio Assassin is an almost sure kill against your command units, and I had nothing that could go in and winkle the Lictors off that objective.  Frogs packed some smack, but they are a pretty fragile 900 point company.  If I had have used the Neuro-Disruptors a bit more cleverly I might not have had a Heirophant in my backline by turn 2.  Razorfang was awesome....but you'd expect that for 1000 points.....right up until the Bio-Titan charged it.  It could very easily have gone boom on turn 3.

My opponent outplayed me really, and it was a squeaky close run thing.  All up, I'm pretty happy with the Slann as a stand-alone force.....big strengths, big weaknesses, lots of flavour.

Hi , I was the bug player in this game.

I am pleased that Bruce thought I outplayed him because I seriously underestimated the amount of firepower he could put out.

So much so I lost pretty much my entire right flank (and all my long range firepower) in the first 2 turns.

I should have gone with my Initial idea which was to concentrate on one flank. I was lulled into thinking as I was fairly shooter unit heavy for a bug army I might have been able to hold my own with 6 Exocrines, 6 Dactylis, Tyranid brood, Dominatrix and Gargoyles.

I was wrong, badly , badly wrong  :(

Lictors using the optional Ambush rules are nice, perhaps a little too nice but I'm not going to complain about it now  :;):

Gratz to the Slann army designer they really captured the feel of a small but highly advanced style force (would be intersting to see how they go up against a mass firepower army such as Imp guard though)

The feel of the volume of firepower they were putting out was horrifying to be on the other side of  :O . Only issue is that the Neuro disruptors are a bit fiddly (d3 turns etc requires a bit too much book keeping and slows the game down a little - was exascerbated by the fact that is was a long game anyway - no morale issues).

When I got to them however it was a different story. Genestealers, Razorfexes etc were having Frog's legs for Dinner that day.

I had done well with my regen roles up until the last turn when it all evened out and I think I regen'ed only 1 on the Dom and none anywhere else. Losing the Hive Queen gave Bruce 7 VPs (5 for Slann being last in control of Objective and 2 for the Queen).

Even if he had stood though Zap would have gotten up on the next turn anyway with the way the field was panning out, best I could have hoped for was to cross the VP threshold myself (The company remnants were running and hiding - so I was limited in what I could reach).

Razorfang Titan was nice but I should have eaten it in HtH but a combination of poor damage rolling and forgetting some bonuses meant I barely scratched the thing with my Hierodule.

Next time he won't be so lucky

Anyway looking forward to having another swing at this again soon when my schedule allows.

Even though the Razorfang didn't go boom, you had a 600 point unit tying up a 1000 point unit for 3 turns....good value for the Bugz.  Of course, if we'd remembered the +2 for the Ripper claws I think the Slann Titan would have gone boom on turn 3 (if I remember the rolls correctly) and the 'Nids would have been victorious on turn 4.

Yeah I know we missed that too  :(  am certain that the Razor Fang would have lost a leg at one point - however I am thinking that I may have had way too many hive mind cards.

In the rules it says you get Hive mind cards for the number of hive mind points that SYNAPSE creatures get. It then however goes on to give all creatures Hive mind points. That makes a big difference as I would have only had a couple of cards each round.

It also depends that in the rules there are two different values given for Hive mind points for the synapse creatures as well.
