This is for an upcoming city fight game against an Imperial guard army (32 stand companies... ouch!), I have not had a tremendous amount of experience of killing Guard armies (mainly Eldar and other Marines). I will write up a report for the EZine with pics for you all.

The map will be split into 9 tiles, and terrain diced off for each tile, so for example:

1 - Empty
2 - Hill
3 - 4 Wood
5 - 6 Town

So plenty of terrain, which could slow me down somewhat. Each tile will have an objective. It will be a 6k game on a 6 by 4 playing area (Would 8 x 6 be better?).

Please note we will be playtesting the NE5 rules. Any tips guys?

So far I am looking at:

Ravenwing Company (500) 1200 total
- Bike Detachment (150)
- Bike Detachment (150)
- Veteran Land Speeders (200) Just to try 'em out :p
- Vindicators (200)

Battle Company (850) 1250 total
- Deathwing Detachment (350)
- Apothcary (50)

Battle Company (925)
- Close Assault Deathwing Detachment (300)
- Chaplin (75)

Tactical Company (750)
- Flamer Detachment
- Apothcary (50)

Land Raider Company (On second thoughts... 900 points! At 600 it is worth it, now... I am leaving it at home.)

ALLIES:
Warlord Titan - 3 x Multiple Fire Rocket Launchers, 1 x Deathstrike Head, Carapace Multilasers, Turbolaser Destructer (will have to check that last weapon) Normally I avoid titans but I just thought it would be fun, as it is not a serious competative game. (800)

Warhound Titan Scout Squadron - 1 w/Turbolaser Destructor & Vulcan Mega Bolter, 1 w/Vulcan Mega Bolter & Inferno Gun (475)

I am expecting hordes of infantry, purely because they are dirt cheap for the IG army, but he is mainly a tank fan, so I am hoping to be able to close assault his tanks and tear them apart in close quarters. He will probably field a titan, and almost definately a leviathon or two. I will probably ignore the titans and praetorians unless there is only one Leviathon where I intend to concentrate my devestators and land speeders on it so I he is paralysed for a turn.

I hope to surge forwards with my infantry and take as many objectives as possible, the tactical and assault marines leap frogging through cover assaulting and shooting up any opposition the Ravenwing on a flank, close assaulting with the bikes and advancing/fire firing with the other units (so I can make my lovely pop-up attacks). The titans will be set up so they can make advance of a decent field of fire, whilst my warhounds get in close and tear apart his formations. Making full use of the silly -1 to hit rule, (is that still in the game? It ought to be removed really).

While I am here, I will post on the mailing list on Monday, but 900 points for a land raider company is just excessive... I always took one, because although they were brittle for 600 points they were worth it, now... I wouldn't. I would accept a small price increase maybe to 750 but no higher...   !!!

I take it you are using, SM2/NetEpic Rules. ?You have enough Infantry, and those come with Rhinos, correct ? ?Vindicators in Urban terrain are a very good idea. ?However, I'm not familiar with a Flammer Det., is that a NetEpic unit ? ?If he is an IG commander worth his "salt", he'll have a lot of artillery, you could use your bikes & Land Speeders to raid and destroy those big guns which could cause you a lot of trouble. Otherwise, I think the bikes would have limited use in urban terrain (?). ?You have no artillery support (whirlwinds, etc.), that is a mistake IMO ??? ? ?You should take some sort of armor, Predators if not Land Raiders, besides 1 det. of Vindicators, to support your Infantry. ?And your Titans should be able to handle his Leviathans or any other heavy units like Baneblades, etc. ? Good idea not taking any close combat weapons on your Titans, they are fire support platfroms, putting a close combat weapon on a titan is like putting a ram on a battle ship - just silly ?! :D ? ?Well I could be wrong, but that's my take on it ... ?

Thats a big increase in points cost... Have the Land Raiders game stats been changed or are they the same as before? If they are unchanged I cant really see why they should cost that much!

You shouldnt take a tactical Company. They are not worth it. I prefer an assault company especially in urban terrain. Best choice against massed infantry are thunderhawks loaded with scatolos assault detachment. Infantry in bunkers or buildings are toasted easily with these shock troops.
You also have nothing in your force to kill his warlord titan(s)!!! I prefer a Reaver and two warhound equipped with turbo laser destructors and one Volcano cannon to finish enemy titans off.
Thats all, puhh.
Please post the battle report if you have some time left

Yes, its netepic, the flamer marines are the give away. These are tactical marines with hand held flamers, good for city fights because their weapons ignore cover modifiers.

I agree the bikes are of limited use in urban settings he's probably better off getting more assault troops.

I also agree some artilery support is needed, although a well armed warlord can double for that. For city fights though, I like warhounds, fast, manueverable and armed with a inferno gun can be quite deadly to troops hiding in buildings.

You opponent, as a tank-o-phile, will probably take at least one detchment of super heavy tanks too, which you are going to have some problems taking down with your titans doing barrage and infantry hunting.  The sheavies could be a big threat to your one and only support titan which you have sadi you are relying upon for artillery support.  (btw I am with L4 here- take whirlwinds, they are harder to hit and dont all die from the same hit like your titan will)

In order to clean up the s-heavies and provide the rolling support you said you will rely on, I would advocate taking a Devestator Company.  Yes they are mega expensive, but that is a lot of dice which can operate in 3 seperate dets as required.  Pay for them by paring off some of the RWing units

All good comments Guys, Rommel ( I read your Book ), assault troops would be a good choice for urban warfare, however my covert predilection for long range fire power shows thru :D.  Flammer troops are a good choice too, Primarch got it right there. Flame throwers are very useful in this terrain.  And Tas and I are big fans of FA.  Titans are a great weapons platform, but while your Titans are hammering his Titans, your Whirlwinds could be smashing his Infantry and your Devestators could be ambushing his tanks.  Sounds like a good time to me  !!!

Hi!

Whirlwinds are an often underestimated unit because they lack the save modifiers of the big IG artillery, but remember it is mobile and moving it around on advance can get direct shots at targets regular artillery would never see, so it has its uses.

Whirlwinds, Thud Guns, M/Mortars, SMs may not have as much FA as the IG, but that makes it all that much more important for them to have some in their force structure. ?And as Primarch said, the Whirlwind can shot and move, that's a clear advantage ...

It probably extends their life expectancy by about 2 turns actually! :;):

I usually keep my FA, on the edge of the board, on my side, behind cover and call it in ... if they want to stop it, they have to come get it ... ? }:)
