Post subject:  Which version for what ??

Hi all,

I'm kind of lost because there is a lot of different netepic versions : netepic gold, netepic platinium and netepic 6.

Can somebody explain to me clearly which version is what ? Which differences are between this 3 ?

If I want to restart playing old epic space marine, which version of netepic should I use ?

Sincerely,

Lysiar

Netepic Gold is i believe the current working version. Netepic platnium is in progress by Mattman, Netepic 6 has just started as an update to NetEpic 5 in answer to your question if you want to play old Epic Space Marine 2nd Edition (the one with army cards) start with NetEpic Gold.

there is the epic 40K FB group where a lot of discussion is going on to update 1st Edition Space Marine and the NetEpic 6 revision.

What SquiggleAmp said is correct, though not all the details you asked for.

Platinum is based around revising the army lists for to be in-line with current W40K rules and fluff. As far as I know, it is not changing any game rules for Gold aside from army building. It is a work-in-progress and thus is not playable yet.

NE6 is a proposed complete revision of Gold. Anything and everything may change, or may not. It is not a playable version as yet, as the discussions about it have only recently begun.

Gold would be what you are looking for IF you are looking for an updated version of SM2 / TL era rules. If you are looking for SM1 / AT era rules, well, there is some talk on Facebook about revising that, but other than that I know of no version that directly supports that.

Just to add more confusion, there is also my Net Epic Evolution rules available. This system uses all the 2nd edition / Net Epic Gold armies but changes the turn sequence. Gone are Movement phase, First Fire and Advance fire phases. Instead there is the Action Phase where players take turns moving and firing units.

Hi!

SquiggleAmp is correct. As of right now Net Epic Gold is what you should use.

The other projects are basically variants (Netepic evolution, net epic Platinum). Based on Gold but with enough differences to make the play experience distinct.

NE6, is a long, long ways off. It has barely begun. So what form it will finally take is uncertain at this stage since it is in its infancy.

Gold is the stable ruleset with updated army cards also available. It is the best thing to use for the second edition epic experience. ;)

So to boil it down NetEpic: Platinum is basically the following:

Net Epic Gold Rules
New Points System
New and Old fluff-based units and additional armies.

and that NetEpic 6 is:
Much revised ruleset
Platinum goodies

Is correct? am I missing any key elements (Matty, no snub intended to NE:E here either, but I am fairly clear on what you are doing.)

Can I make a suggestion or 2?

Suggestion 1)

paste the rule set goals as a sticky for each forum. Maybe even a separate alternative rules forum for each NE:P NE:E and NE6. I was a bit confused about this myself.

suggestion 2)
I would love to see a goal of making it more "Modular", for the lack of a better term. Either advanced rules or house rules should be able to be bolted on or dropped in. NE6 could probably even come with an Advanced Rule book

As an example, the flyers thing. We have 3 scratched together systems with some synergy and a good bit of difference. I would love to be able to create a basic rule set that makes people fairly happy and plays in a streamlined fashion, while still having some flavor. In building it, however I think it will be wise to spend a bit of extra time to keep it from entangling other parts of the game so that we can also put together and "Advanced" set of rules that is a literal drop in for the basic rules.

I don't think the extra effort will be mammoth, but I know it is a lofty goal (but hey, so is having many multiple 20K armies) ;).

If anything above doesn't make sense, I will be more than happy to try to clarify my thoughts.

<mega edit for clarity and structure>

Ok, thanks all for your answers. It's a lot much clearer now.

I will then take the road to netepic gold (to begin with).

The Platinium version with the cost point formula and the new 40k lore integrated is definitevely my future second step. As for netepic 6, I will lurk, and read the development and discussions here as they progress.

One last question :
what about the energy titan system ? It's an optional rule for gold/platinium isn't it ?

Short answer : yes (and evolution too). :)

A sticky in the net epic forum or each relevant forum would be useful. It is all a tad confusing at the start.

As a note, the Points Formula is not only for Platinum or NE6. It is designed to be used with Gold primarily, as that is the only currently usable rule-set available. While it's primary function is to bring balance to all the forces in Gold, it's secondary purpose is to allow armies from Gold to play in the same battle as forces from Platinum, NE6, or whatever else may come.

I agree, a sticky thread called something like "Net Epic Beginners Guide" would be a really good idea. As well as explaining (as this thread does) what the variants and current projects are, it would be a good place to stick all of the rules variants documents. ;)

There is already some information for beginners on the sister site:

http://www.forum.specialist-arms.com/in ... pic=6815.0

The current situation is, however, far too confusing in my view. This is another reason why we should not have all these competing sets of rules. We're in danger of this turning into the problems EA have with too many sets of rules and a complete lack of clarity.

I think that any sticky should just explain Gold, and say that this is the core system. Anything else is optional, and should not, in my view, be discussed in any sticky for beginners.

Ok, I'm a lurker here too, just trying to wrap my head around where to start, and how to introduce friends to this so they don't get overwhelmed... Aside from Net Epic Gold/6/Platinum/Evolution... how do they fit in with Epic 40k, epic armageddon, and NET EA... and where are the army lists to use for what? What do tournaments use? Where do I start? Seriously my head is spinning...

Post subject:  Re: Which version for what ??

That's the problem with EPIC for newbies here as this board supports all versions of epic to a greater or lesser extent it's become a bit of a minefield for new/returning players to sift through all the various threads in an attempt to work out which version is which and what version they may want to play.

What is needed really IMHO is a sticky listing/explaining the different versions of the epic system with direction to the appropriate threads for each game. I know it would have helped me when I first discovered this forum.

Does anyone else think this would be a good idea.
