I must say, I've owned Gorgons since the dawn of time (or so it seems), but I can't recall ever trying them.

Now, the local game store dumped all their dystopian war stuff at a 70% discount so I bought what they had left. Amongst them some tanks that would look excellent as Leman Russ varian proxies (republique of France Focaud medium tanks). So this got the snowball rolling. Next I'm looking through my bits box and what do I find? Enough troops to create both a IG tactical squad (Well perhaps even 2 if I repaint some stands) and a couple of unpainted assault companies. (God I love this bit box of holding, it alvays provides a nice surprice of long forgotten items of days long past) And there, right in the bottom - a couple of unpainted Gorgons. Hmmm... Now transports with a move of 10cm? And a range of 15cm will they be any good I wonder?

Anyone with experience of running a Gorgon assault company? Are they any effective?
(I've already ordered myself some more proxies from Exodus games, so I will have more than enough models...)

Let's see ... heavily armored and well armed APCs/IFVs ... what's not to like ? :eh And note Trouble Maker Games makes a good Crassus type vehicle too ... ;D http://exoduswars.com/products/novan-we ... n-squadron Of course I may be biased having served in 3 Mech (M113) Bns ... and commanding an M113 Grunt company. Keep your troop carriers under cover and advance as close as possible to the Objective. Use the Vehicles' weapons to support your infantry and suppress and attrite the enemy on/near the Objective ... that's how to use APCs/IFVs ... heavy or otherwise ...

Hi!

I use them quite frequently when I play IG. The heavy armor is one of the few ways guard have to transport units safely to battle. The mine thrower weapon, while short ranged can deter the enemy from getting too close.

The also make good "hit sponges" once they deploy the transported infantry and act as shields.

Thanks,

I saw that in youre latest batrep and figured if Prime use them, they are probably good even though speed seems like an issue when the vehicles are slower than the troops inside... However, there are some units that performes surpricingly well despite not looking all that great on paper. Also legio thx for the tactical input.

Hi!

They are indeed slow, so you need to lay down a realistic goal for them to reach in a game. Also, use them in force, not piecemeal.

I usually concentrate the whole company on one or two close by objectives.

They are not the most sexy of units but proficient for what they are designed to do.

I'm probably going to support them with a company of stormhammers.

Hi!

That's an excellent idea!

The fire power of stormhammers makes an assault very untenable unless the opponent dedicates major firepower to that sector, probably weakening his endeavors elsewhere.

I find the Gorgons too slow to be effective. By the time they get where you want them the battle is almost over. :-\

Hi!

Which is why you need to be realistic on where they are going. ;)

If you look at my battle report, I carefully selected where they would go, made it at the right time and turned the tide on the front.

If you ever play a siege scenario, they are a must have. :)

TBH, in answer to the first question, not really, no. While they can be pretty durable, they just dont offer anything on the board. If you want something big and tough to sit on an objective a SHT is always better because it can still shoot stuff, and as a transport it is a bit pointless as it is sooo slow.

I'd only ever take them with the Arbites and then only for flavour.

me too I just like the Gorgon COy while it have not really a punch.
BTW I still use 500 Points per Coy and it´s still not a choice but a fun ;D

It´s a good idea to use Gorgons along with other SHT so the enemy has to choose on which ones he would concentrate his fire.
I often use such tactics.

Hi!

Well, one thing to be done in platinum is reassess every units value and use. Tweak when necessary.

Yes, like Primarch said, base their use on their stats. And look at the terrain as well ...

They are certainly going into the IG project I'm currently working on, 5 detachments strong. A company and a couple of extra detachments for bigger games.

But with the support of a company of stormhammers and perhaps a couple of detachments of Leman Russ Conquerors I will be commiting a substantial ammount of points to a limited area of the battleboard. Which means I will be needing units that can hold their own like a Leviatan and a pair of warhounds on other parts of the board.

I'm now only awaiting the stuff I ordered from the chaps over at Exodus Wars, and I'll only be a few hours of painting shy of completing my third 4000+ army since ending my hiatus some months ago. Not enough playing though... :)
