Post subject:  Marine v Eldar Titan Close Combat Rules

Hello!

I had a situation yesterday where one of my Warhounds was engaged in close combat by an Eldar Revenant. As my Warhound was on First Fire, he got to let rip at the Revenant, but I couldn't find any rules about whether the Revenant would still get the save for the Holo-fields or not. Because of this, and because I didn't want my opponent thinking I was making up rules, I had to work on the assumption that they would still get the save. He rolled and saved which was a bit frustrating. It turned out to be a moot point as my Warhound delivered a KO to the Revenant's head, but thought it worth mentioning for future games.

I do remember that in the original Adeptus Titanicus, when a Titan engaged another in close combat, the Void Sheilds merged, meaning that the Titan on First Fire could fire inside the shields and therefore inflict damage straight on to the enemy, regardless of how many shields he/she would have. Following that rationale, the Eldar would not get their Holo-field save. I reckon they shouldn't either as when you are engaged in CC, you are at point-blank range anyway.

I was thinking of reintroducing these old rules for future battles, but was wondering what you all thought about it? Obviously the rule would be as valid for Phantom & Warlock titans as much as Revenants.

Cheers!

Hi!

Eldar get their holo saves. Even in close combat. Holo fields are work by diffracting the eldar titans image. Difficult to lock on for any weapon, ranged or close combat.

I actually find it easier to justify the eldar holofield for close combat than imperial shields in the same situation (they still apply to by the way).

Removing the saves or shields really nerfs being on first fire.

Are you saying that you still get to use Void Shields if hit in close combat? That just seems wrong, can't remember ever playing like that back in SM2.

When you fire at a titan engaging in close combat, you "snap fire" at it without the -1 to hit penalty before it enter in base contact with your titan so:

- you still suffer the "Hard to hit" penalty for a warhound/revenant titan that's on charge order
- eldar titan holo-field still works (as it's not in base contact when snap fire applies)
- you still have to pass the shields if you want to destroy it before it reachs the close combat

Hi Mattman,

No, I was talking about First Fire against units engaging you in close combat. The Void Shields/Holo Fields are still effective against the shots that the First Fire Titan unleashes against the charging opponent. Those same shields/fields do not apply once the close combat begins.

Scream has reminded me that a big part of the reason why I was confused about this is that I continue to ignore the snap fire rules.

I would agree with scream here
imagine you fire at the Titan while it´s closing in NOT if you are in base contact already.
