Post subject:  Help with creating an army

So I decided to build an epic crimson fist army. I play skirmish games with epics but it's time to go big also :)

I've read the rules but since I might have a serious case of stupidity, I'm not sure how to get started,

I want to start small to make it possible to build a playable army within the time I have available. With a newborn I don't have too much time to paint weekly.

Ok, that said I need help with the basic army card choosing. Points could be around 2000?do I always have to take the 1st company card? (1400pts) And then choose from the cards that this card opens up for choosing :

This card may take the normal one Special and five Support cards, but may not take any other infantry support units (though taking cavalry, tanks, artillery, etc is fine).

So for 2000 pt army I would have the company card of termies and 600. Pts left to use for special and support cards? These can be from the codex list.

Though, the cheapest cards ate 650 pts..tactial company etc. meaning I wouldhave to take a larger point limit. What if I dont want termies at all, but rules say I have to.. Confusing.

This cant be right so please help :)

I would suggest rather than jumping straight in with a Crimson Fists army and trying to follow their list and restrictions, go for a generic marine list just in their colours (as you have seen, you have to spend 1400pts on one card to start with the Crimson Fists). As your army builds and increases in size, then you can move into the full Crimson Fists list. A basic marine army will also give you the best way of mixing the units, understanding the rules (if you are new to the game) and figuring out what is best.
If I was going to build 2000pts of marines, I would try something like:

Battle Company 850
Terminator Detachment 350
Devastator Detachment 350
Predator Squadron 200
Land Speeder Squadron 200
Apothecary 50

2000

You have some combat troops with the assault marines and terminators, you have some long range fire power with the devastators, predators and land raiders and the speeders are useful for jumping on armour.

Hope that helps.

One question Mattman.

Why more devastators?

Now I belive you never played Netepic. ;D
Devestators are fantastic fire support units.

Mattman“s list is a good mix for the beginning

Exactly what Ulric said. Sure you might not bring down titans with Devastators, but they are really good at shooting most things. Most infantry is really bad at shooting. Devs can take out light tanks, infantry or strip shields very easily.
When I make an army, the Devastator Company is usually the first thing I pick.

Yep, Mattman's list is a good one! I'm a fan of those Devastator Companies as well, loads of firepower that can get some good protection once they get inside buildings (beware picking them against Squats though!).

Just to confuse matters here's what I would suggest for 2,000 points:

450 Bike Company
850 Battle Company
500 Warhounds
200 Predator Squadron

This gives you a mix of decent firepower (Devastators, Predators, Warhounds), fast moving cavalry in the bikes (perfect for ambushing enemy tanks that advance too far forward) and infantry for holding objectives in buildings and/or trees (Tactical and Assault Troops). Good luck!

PS Thanks for posting this thread Lead-Space and for your response Mattman. I'd designed my 20,000 point Marine army to playtest my campaign rules (which will hopefully start tomorrow) and looking at the points costs you posted made me realise that a lot of the points costs have changed for NetEpic Gold! Back to the drawing board!

Equally fine Biss, I just wanted to avoid any titans in a low point game and any units that are down as "with opponents permission".

Thanks B

That seems to be a good option. For now I will go with the first suggestion and keep the other in mind also!
