they need to take planets as well as lose them, inflict crippling losses on the enemy as well as suffer them...

Isnt that happening in the Sabbat Worlds Crusade in the Gaunts Ghosts series?

They are assaulting and retaking a large area that was corrupted by the Forces of Chaos ?:-:

I need to read those stories some day.  ???

I just did not believe they could be any good. Seemed like they would be nothing more then further Marketing tools.  :L

Maybe I was wrong.

I sometimes think they are marketing tools, too. I've read a few 40k books. Some are definitely better than others.

Hi Dafrca,

I liked the Gaunt's Ghosts tales. I borrowed them from a "former friend" up until the third or fourth book and want to finish the series. I had the same reservations you had about them, but was pleasantly surprised when I actually tried to read them... they were good!

I plan to go out and buy them so I can finish the series.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

The Gaunts Ghost books are certainly some of the best out there, and the Eisenhorn series (and Ravener) are actually even better - but that is a different thread.

Unfortunately, most of the other books fall into the category of 'standard formula' ("the Marine stepped through the hail of fire, bullets bouncing of his inhuman frame, and he gutted the heretic with a single sweep of his chainsword...") - with very little actual story/plot and just a sequence of 'action' scenes strung together.... or garbage. There are a few really good ones out there, and there was a simple review thread a while ago.

I'm not too keen on the GW Necrons (especially with no models) either.

Primarch

I don't like the Necron fluff either; the star gods are not that great idea.

Plus it makes them a bit too serious threat. I mean just HOW many "new threats" can the Imperium survive? I know logic and GW don't mix but it still irks me. I want to see the Imperium kick some butt! ?}:)

Hi!

I like the fluff we came up for netepic better. The slann made necrons to combat the tyranids. Like any sentient being some of those necrons can be "evil" and form their own clans.

Much better than star destroying monsters.

I always like the idea of the Robots created by a race, then the robots get smart and kill of the race they were to protect. Bang, bad guys with no heart. Not Evil or Good, just driven to the task...

That was the origin of the Cylons in the original Battlestar Galactica series too.  They were developed by a reptilian race (which the "Imeprius Leader" series were modelled after) but turned on them and wiped them out.

Then they decided to keep going and try to wipe out all the other races...

Yep, that and the Terminator and many other SciFi books. It is a theme often used. It was one of the things I liked about the I, Robot movie. One of the only things mind you.

It is a theme I see come up often in SciFi. I would not mind if we used the Necrons this way in the back ground.

Just an idea.

Sadly true about the vast majority of BL books...  :;):

I agree that Eisenhorn and GGs are excellent reads though (if not classic literature)... :D

Hi!

I second this. I enjoyed Guants Ghosts as well.  :D
