Post subject:  TodC: Feedback on Painted Minis?

I've been working on painting and basing my Microworld minis. I use them for RPGs, so they are individually based.

I'm working on better washes/shading and improved basing. And getting better at pictures.

Any feedback/suggestions? I'm getting in some washes that should still make shadows without darkening the original colors so much. Thanks!

From what I can tell they look fairly good. The pictures are a bit blurry as I suspect you're using a digital camera on a non optical zoom. It's generally better to not zoom and instead up the megapixels to max max max and use a program to crop them instead. I suggest you set up a few more lights around ND the minis to help illuminate them as well. Even without a light box just taping a bit of thin paper over the lamp can diffuse the lighting to show off those details.

Thanks!

No zoom (or a 1.5 or 2x optical zoom, only on the ogres). All artifacts, except the ogres on the ends, are from shrinking the images to be 900 pixels wide and or other things that happened to the images before posting, since some forum software doesn't let you shrink them dynamicallly to fit on the page. And then combining the images together introduced more pixelation. I posted this on a spur of the moment, and wasn't at my home desktop, so you don't want to know how I combined the separate images into one. ;D

The thing I found (like with the ogres) is to only fill the middle of the camera frame with the minis, since even without zoom all cameras have some minor fisheye that makes the minis on the edge out of focus.

I am using a light box. The 'LimoStudio 16" x 16" Table Top Photo Photography Studio Lighting Light Tent Kit in a Box' from Amazon. It makes focusing a lot easier. I still need to brighten the photos a little but I think most of the issues at this point are in what we will amusingly call "post processing".

I'd adjust your f-stop and exposure values, if supported.

looking forward to seeing more!

Thanks! I appreciate the suggestions.

Would increasing the exposure brightness help? I know where the button for that is. :-) I can also set the Aperture-priority down (that seems to be f-stop, right?), to set the focus more on the foreground. (We have an older but still decent Panasonic DMC-FZ28 camera.)

I didn't seen any real difference in quality between "intelligent Assistant" (iA) and Macro mode--iA is smart enough to pick the macro mode for what I'm doing.

If you don't mind helping, I can post unedited pictures (maybe this weekend).

Usually, I take pictures of wildlife at 25 to 200 yards, where I really need all the automatics, because the animals don't hang around long enough for fussing with settings. (I just set it on "sports" mode with a fine/small autofocus aiming point.)

When I take pics of my 6mm. I put the camera on the brightest level, with flash and on the "smallest' setting. On my Fuji 470. That is the little icon of a flower or text. And I also may edited those pics on my Photobucket link. To make the pics brighter or darker. etc. E.g. like my pic I posted below. After - Before ...

With the light tent, my camera doesn't want to use the flash. The inside of the tent is actually pretty bright. I think the white background makes the camera make the minis darker, but the darker backgrounds I have didn't really work well. So a normal exposure for the minis makes the background overexposed.

Legion 4, I'm also hoping jimmyzimms' suggestion for exposure and Aperture-priority tell the camera to concentrate on the minis and not the background and fix the brightness and more focusing on the minis. I may also try with the black and the white backgrounds and see how that works.

Well experiment with it and see what works best for you. ^-^

New 6mm paints. I set the camera on aperture priority. With the black background I had to reduce the exposure. This is using Vallejo color wash, which is a bit lighter than the Reaper inks.

I did more reading and figured that maybe increasing the F-stop would help. This increases the depth of field (the range that is "in focus") and helps the camera focus on the 6mm minis. This also requires a bipod, as the shutter is open longer. I tested with a couple sets of minis without the light tent.

Some 6mm "red lizards"--I decided to feature these in the sci-fi RPG I'm running. The lizards with the mounts are from Microworld. The f-stop and EV changes help a lot.
