With only 1 outstanding order left to pack, I decided to sit down and write another end-of-year recap post. After last year’s dour, semi-personal post, I’m keeping this year’s recap strictly business focused. For various reasons, I was able to make more time for the business this year, and as a result pushed out more products than I had in 2024. Nearly all of the remaining Magister Militum 3mm range was posted back up for sale over the summer, and in the 4th quarter I was able to make 2 out of my 3 targeted monthly releases in the form of the 3mm Crusader Kingdoms and 6mm Scifi Kreen releases. Given my track record in 2024, 2 out of 3 is not too bad!
Sales were back up in 2025 to 2020-2021 levels, the primary drivers being an uptick in 6mm Fantasy sales, a good showing by the Chinese Warring States line, and the Renaissance line sales coming back slightly from the gutter. While I did also see a 37% increase in 3mm Fantasy sales, overall 3mm remains a niche market, being about 1/3rd the size of 6mm fantasy sales. The 3mm Historicals sold okay-ish this year, but sales need to increase if there is any hope of recouping the investment in a reasonable timeframe / ever. Admittedly, preserving them was more a labor of love than an investment, but I do want to do more to market the range overall. Interestingly, I have sold almost none of the black powder ranges. My own personal theory on that is that I think a lot of the European conflicts are just not as popular in US gaming circles, and non-US buyers are put off from ordering by high shipping costs, taxes, tariffs, etc.
6mm Bronze Age sales were also not stellar…I guess it is not a terribly popular period overall. This is another one where I just have a personal interest in that period of history and have tons of products I am looking to release next year.
I thought maybe it would be interesting for folks to see my top 5 and bottom 5 selling product lines from 2025, which I have attached to this post
These top 5 sellers make up a whopping 33% of all sales (top 10 being 46%). A few interesting observations here, both the Crusaders and Chinese Warring States were also successful KS projects, which has not hurt their sales in the long-term at all. I know the game has changed a lot since I ran my last campaign…but overall it tells me that a return to that medium is kind of a no-brainer, even with all the additional logistic headaches it causes. Another interesting thing is that a couple of these are also some of my oldest lines re: dwarves and woodland with less sculpt variety. I actually recently had a commission completed to fully revamp the orc line (hoping for a 2026 release there!) …so will definitely be watching to see how sales do there, as that will largely dictate whether the expense is worth it for other, older armies.
Bottom 5…oh man, knife to my heart! The Bugbears I can’t say are really that much of a surprise. Naval fantasy and 15mm fantasy, yikes, both are extreme personal and business failures I will likely revisit in other posts. 6mm scifi…I think I haven’t really marketed it very well. The Dregs are really more proxy-focused, and with the proliferation of prints and the 8mm scale change in that space, a lack of sales makes sense. Mer Team Kukri I think I just haven’t shown off much, and again, 6mm scifi now has tons of competition in the 3D printing world, likely often cheaper than for what I can sell with my metal miniatures.
So what to expect in terms of releases for the first half of next year? In no particular order (other than the Elves):
6mm Fantasy Elven Kingdoms 6mm Bronze Age: Middle Kingdom Egyptians, Libyans, Nubians 6mm Fantasy Amazons 6mm Fantasy Undead Pharaohs 6mm Dieselpunk Insect Nomads (finally!) 6mm Scifi Gigarach Queendom 3mm fantasy Beastkin Many other 3mm fantasy odds and ends I have been waiting to release for various armies
Once again, massive thankyou to all my customers and collaborators past and present, I wish you all a happy and healthy New Year.
