Guys, it seems that one of the intentions of "stubborn" is to be less willing to withdraw, but to have less effect than Fearless.

I seem to recollect one suggestion of halving the number of hack-down hits, but that was rejected for some reason or other. I wondered if a slightly less punitive alternative might be considered, a modified form of the effects on WE:-
Quote:
"Stubborn formations that lose an assault may only withdraw 15cm. If there are any enemy units within 15cms of the squat formation after it makes a withdrawal then it suffers one extra point of damage (no save allowed) for every two enemy units (or WE DCs) that are within 15cms."

I've never seen what's wrong with giving a save against hackdown hits. It really seems the most elegant option to me.

Well, there's less dice rolling for one. It's the same as the withdrawal rules we have now only the measurements are different.

Ginger, have you had a bad experience with the stubborn rule? If so, what happened?

No (other than missing the change discussed in the other thread :D )

I was merely presenting a possible alternative to 'auto-destruction', given the likelihood of other enemy formations being in 15cm of the broken squat units after their measly 15cm Withdrawal.

Whya does the latest army list compendium (2014) still have the old rules for stubborn in? (re-roll of 1s for rally and assault)

(and follow up question as I missed the thread) - what is wrong with the re-roll 1s rules that means it needs changing?

1. I have no idea why the stubborn rule is different in the compendium than on the 1.4 Thurgrimm list. I sent a PM to Dave to find out.

2. I went in a different direction with the Squats. Stubborn has always been viewed as a positive quality, but let's face it, it is (more?) often a bad quality. Somebody unwilling to change their mind, change the tactics, accept that things have gone poorly. The Squats have a tremendous number of things going for them and the stubborn special rule is used to mitigate those benefits. Sure, it might work out for them on occasion. You only have to pull back 15cm, you rally, you win the day. Yay. But the fact that they are stubborn probably led to the extinction of the Squats. ;)

I can testify to the curse of Stubborn, many a time I have wanted to run my forces back to a safe location only for them to effectively stand there and be hit by a follow up engage.
