Last night I had arranged to play my regular Epic gaming mate in a quick 3000pts battle (quick cause I had to get up at 4 the following morning to go to work ? )

In the afternoon however I got a call from my Dad to say that I'd had a delivery at my parents. ?(I get parcels sent there as no one is at my house during the day) ?I wandered around after work to pick up the package. ?I'm due a couple items at the moment (Chaosorc, Firestorm, The_Real_Chris, one extra off eBay package) so didn't really know what it was.

It was a big package so I opened it up to find... (Sorry got to get back to work now, be back soon!)

Ok have a few minutes spare before status meeting at work.

Well in the package was fully half a marine chapter! ?This was excellent as I'd only just got a note saying that my ebay seller had sent it the day before! ?Well done Royal Mail!

I knew that Kev had been painting an Ultramarine army and I'd purchased a complete chapter from a nice chap I found on Ebay.  So we decided to try out a nice mix of his troops (Kev's) and my newly delivered ones. ?We had to have a bit of a play with troop cards as he wanted to use some non standard formations for second edition (e.g. 1 warhound, a space marine vindicator company)

Army's consisted of -

Marines -

Warhound - 250pts.
Tactical Co - 750pts.
Vindicator Co - 450pts.
Chaplin - 50pts.
Whirlwinds - 150pts.
Assault troops - 250pts
Thunderhawk - 50pts.
Land speeders - 200pts.
Bikes - 150pts.
Terminators (2 detachments) - 300pts x 2
Dreadnoughts - 100pts.

Squats -

Iron Eagles - 550pts
Goliaths - 450pts
Colossus - 500pts
Cyclops - 450pts
Thunderers (2 detachments) - 300pts x 2
Thundefires - 150pts
Rapiers - 50pts
Tarantulars - 100pts
Berserkers - 150pts

Be back soon, meeting now.

Ok finished work now and with out the interuptions of football I'll crack on with deployment of scenary and troops

Hopefully the map will show the basic scenary layout so you can envisage the battlefield.

Green = forest
Black = buildings
Grey = ruins
yellow = bunkers
line = road with hedgerows down both sides.

I set up first with the Squats. ?My thunderers occupy the buildings at the bottom of the map, my iron eagles are behind the buildings and forest at the bottom of the picture. ?All my artillery and support units are behind the ruins along with the cyclops. ?The colossus starts in the middle of the two buildings. ?The bezerkers are just inside the woods aiming for the first bunker.

Kev's deployment is of an armour fist across the board with all tactical formations in rhinos accompanied by the chaplin between the woods at the top and the first building. ?His terminators are also there. ?His warhound is in the middle of the two central buildings. ?His vindicators, land speeders and bikes are all on the left flank aiming for the hill and then through to my wooded flank. ?His thunderhawk has the assault troops in and is positioned initially behind the woods near his whirlwinds at the top of the image.

Objectives - 4 in bunkers, one on hill, one of large building at end of road. two in buildings in deployment zones.

Turn one -

It quickly becomes apparent that during my deployment of scenary I might have been a bit over zealous on the amount used... All the buildings and forests give Kev a massive advantage as he can advance from cover to cover with ease.

Kev wins the intiative and opts to move first, he charges near enough his whole army over the board with much of it reaching the hill (Speeders / bikes) or in the gap behind to occupy the bunkers.

The thunderhawk which is on charge orders flies towards my large and very tempting formation of artillery and support units, only to be intercepted by a barrage of anti aircraft fire.  Although the marine pilot managed to jink his way through the first units fire the second unit blows a hole in the side of the aircraft and sends it spiralling earthward, including the assault marines inside it.  Thunderfires have paid for themselves already by saving my goliath company..

My only movement is to charge the berserkers forward to capture the first bunker and take up positions in the forest on the left flank.

Kev only has one thing on first fire, that being the whirlwinds.  These have to fire indirectly due to the amount of terrain, and as such veer off wildly from there intended target.

Going to the eye line of my cyclops I cannot see anything at all, not a good state of affairs.. The colossus is the same but at least they can use the spotter gyro.  In a flash of inspiration (or the sugar hit from a major cup of tea!) I decide to be really mean... If I cannot see around the terrain then the terrain will have to disappear!  My goliaths open up on the buildings by the road so I can get an open view of the marine army.  Two failed armour saves later and a pile of rubble is all that remains of the large building at the end of the road and one of it's gate houses.

Things are going well now.  The cyclops can now see a complete tactical company all closely packed together.. I fire off all 6 missiles at once, it covers the majority of the company  Rolling to hit I manage to hit none of them what so ever.. I've never seen so many 1's and 2's - 12 dice all misses... gahhh.  Ok the hellfury now, nice and easy to hit that terminator carrying land raider... I roll and again a 1!  How galling..

Ok the colossus see's if it can do any better.  4 missiles this time, again at the infantry company.. Four barrages land, 8 dice rolled again all 1's and 2's all misses these guys are living a charmed life here.  10 missiles in one turn enough to decimate any Ork clan and the marines survive the lot... Doesn't bode well for the game with these sorts of dice rolls.

The thunderers in the buildings can see the bikes and land speeders, 4 units managed to kill off 4 land speeders and 4 bikes, my dice rolls actually meant something!

No real advance fire on this turn or close combat so onto the end phase.  Kev needs to check morale on the bikes and land speeders, he fails on his bikes rolling a one so next turn they go on fall back orders.

Kev's main armoured fist is completely untouched and I've used all my missile ordanace, not good.

Turn 2

I win the intiative and make Kev go first.  He again charges all his marines forward and gets into positions where I cannot see him at all.

My moves consist of re deploying my iron eagles to the far left flank to try and deal with his vindicator company that will be advancing over the hill next turn.

Sporadic fire this turn from my goliaths on his whirlwinds reduces them to one model.  The colossus fires it's doomsday cannon at the warhound in the vain attempt to reduce it's void shields, but nothing happens.  The Cyclops opens up with it's Hellfury against the warhound as well but it doesn't even hit the target... The thunderers cannot see anything his turn so wait.

Nothing much else happens, Kev is in control of the majority of objectives (5 of the 8) and we're only aiming for 40 VP's.

No close combat or advance fire means that the last thing to do is check on Kev's bike unit which was on fall back orders.  This promptly fails it's morale check once more (rolling a 1!) and is removed from the board.

Turn three

I win the intiative once more and make kev move first.  Kev is aiming to completely over run my positions on this turn or next.  He is still charging all his troops (bit like charge of the light brigade we find out later on!) over the board.  All the tactical marines are now on teh hill line, but he doesn't deploy them, hoping to fate that I won't manage to kill them all before they sieze the last two bunkers.

His vindicators have advanced over the top of the hill as well and are now in range of the thunderers and most of my deploymeny zone, 10 heavy armoured tanks against 9 iron eagles and some berserkers... Umm not good odds.  His land raiders are currently maneouvering into a position to unload all his terminators into the middle of my artillery company as well.

My movement phase consists of the suicidal charge of the iron eagles against the vindicators!

Ok onto the firing phase.

I open up with everything basically.. After my luck on the last two turns I'm not really expecting much to be honest.

Thunderers 1 engages tactical detachment 1, killing them all!  The dice rolled very favourably for me there and Kev sucked at making his saving throws.

Thunderers 2 engages tactical detachment 2, again killing all of them in a volley of heavy weapons fire.

The goliaths realising that they cannot open up on the terminators and land raiders as they are to close open fire on the dreadnoughts which are sat behind the tactical detachments.. Three dreadnoughts bite the dust.

The thunderfires and tarantulars open fire on the land raiders with terminators in to try and stopp them from engaging the artillery in the next turn, the thunderfires inflict 2 casualties but to my surprise the tarantulars match this! All 4 land raiders die and the terminators inside are enveloped in the flames.

The colossus opens up on the land speeder which had charged it with bolters, 16 dice, just 1 "6" needed but nothing, not even a 5!! Ok battlecannons open up on the last tactical detachement and all the rhinos with marines inside are destroyed totally..  The warhound is the next target and the two front cannons open up stripping the void shields.

The leaves it open to fire from the cyclops who hits this time, the shot doesn't deviate and hits the head, needless to say the armour buckles and gives way as the pulse sears through the war machine.   I roll a natural 6 on the head damage chart and the warhound keels over with out having fired a single shot all game...

My gamble to enage the vindicators in close combat fails miserably as kev beats me on 5 of the 9 close combats... The remaining whirlwind is killed off by the spotter gyrocopter as I'd charged that in the movement phase.

The vindicators in a last vain bid to kill something fire at my colossus but only strip 5 void shields.

Well that has to be the bloodiest turn I've ever played at this point value.  My previous bad luck with the dice seemed to change (then again it could have been the sheer quantity of dice that I had to roll in that last turn!) in this turn and I managed to kill the majority of Kev's troops..

6 vindicators and 1 dreadnough are all that's left of the once proud marine army.   Squat casualties, 5 iron eagles, 2 berserkers.

Lessons learnt..

Thunderfires are very good.. I like these units alot.  Especially as Kev now has access to 10 of my new Thunderhawks!

Thunderers can put down such a withering hail of fire that even if your luck is out your bound to hit and kill something!

Do not keep troops inside vehicles beyond the first or second turn, espiecally when faced with the fire power that Squats can deliver up close and personal.

The Cyclops is a nice specialist unit but is limited on the amount of long range weapons it can bring to bear..  I prefer colossus as a general super heavy.  When Kev get's his warlords and reavers then I might think about taking it again.  450 pts to kill off 250 pts of warhound isn't a good investment.

Iron eagles are not close combat specialists, stop using them like they are!  They are not tanks either so learn how to use them and stop getting them killed!!

We've now agreed that I will use a marine army against his marine army so that we avoid the squat policy of sit back and shoot everything.  Killing everything on the board is only annoying if your on the end of it!  :D

Hi!

Marine armies usually need a heavy titan to deal with squats effectively.

Also terminators with the teleport ability to disrupt thunderer formations is a good way to go.

In addition a massive drop pod dop is effective since thunderfires find it more difficult to get more that a few of them and the loss is minimal.

Umm I did offer him a warlord titan company but he wanted to use the models he's recently painted.. Three warlords would definately have made a more interesting battle.

This is the second battle where Kev hasn't deployed his infantry quick enough, I think we will have to use drop pods and a lot more Thunderhawks.  I'll give him the option of using teleport as per grey knights as well on the next game I think. Just means he'll loose the land raiders for those terminator detachments. A fair trade off I feel.

Either that or I'll have to reduce the size of the battlefield so it's more up close and personal straight away.
