Hi Everyone

I have started a mailgroup concerning the old computer game on Epic scale-Final Liberation. I still play it and the new MODS as I have little time for boardgaming anymore.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Final_Lib ... d=81280655

Final Liberation is an old computer game celebrating the world of Epic 40K. This group is for current players and some motivated people wishing to expand the game system. Welcome to all interested.

Best Wishes

My experience with Final Liberation I

Final Liberation was my first game of introduction to the 40K universe. Later I took up Space Marine, then Epic 40000 and Netepic. I occasionally get to have a 40K battle and absolutely love the 40K fluff that GW has created.

Well, coming from a Historical WWII background the IG units were pretty easy to play. I had difficulty learning to use IG infantry and now use cover and half-move; cover; next move; move a out of cover fire, and then try to get back into cover, tactics. Always take Tactical Squads - their mass fire can even take down the stronger enemy units. Naturally with IGs abilty to take artillery and decent AFVS makes them very strong over any open area of the battlefield. However if you are facing Ork Gargants or Chaos heavy units you will have to concentrate fire on single units to be able to win. I have had Battle setup games where I have had infantry holding a line and a mass of artillery slaughtering the enemy before they can bring their weapons to bear onto the IG infantry.

The Leman Russ is in WW II terms the MBT ie Panther of the battlefield. Given sufficent Leman Russes, backed by other IG units, you can usually take on anything. I had difficulty using correct tactics for the Chimera APC. At first I put it too far forward using it like a tank. It is just a battle taxi with moderate firepower. You must utilise the 16 move to split to fire-hide-move tactics. I rarely use mounted/transported infantry. I just find the maps too small for effective use and gunnery ranges too long. Maybe someone can advise me on this?

Which brings me to my usually bad performance with some Ork units especially the bikes and the lighter AFVs. I just have not got the hang of them. The computer uses them much better against me. So I know they can be good units.

I just played an Ork force in a 1000pt Battle game with Stompas, Deathrollers, Warboss and transport. I fought to a draw (we both got down to 0 in the same turn). The mission was IG flank attack and the computer choose NINE Whirlwinds. It was literally raining rockets. One Whirlwind actualy meleed with a Deathroller and won????? That's CC 4 versus CC 0 for the Whirlwind -- lucky lucky! The map was Ruined City 1 and I made some movement mistakes with two of my Stompas, preventing them from firing early on. The map/movement system can be very frustrating in that it 'looks' like you can pass through a location when you cannot. This happens in close terrain a lot. Well I got seven of the Whirlwinds and a couple of Chimeras and Leman Russes but lost all the Deathrollers and one Stompa to close assault from a Space Marine squad. His remaining IG infantry and Space Marines evened the score.

My experience with Final Liberation II

Some of the fun-type Quick Battle games I have had:

*Take the minumum points for a Titan or a Gargant and give either the IG/SM or Ork/Chaos some more points choice. EG 1000pts CmD Card plus Titan versus computer pick 1500pts Chaos/Ork.

*Take the exact same units (build and Army) and take your Army through as many as possible different maps as possible. I find this is an excellent way to learn the game and have variety of paly at the same time.

*Reduce down your own units points against a fixed number of computer chosen opponets. So to win against say 2000pts how small an army (less than 2000pts) can you have and still win.

*A variation on the above is to select an all SM army (or likewise themed army) and measure what size Chaos or Ork army you can beat.

I rarely play the campaign because time constraints. It works okay in Win XP, however, you will not see the video cutscenes as they are not recognisable by later Win versions. Pity, because these where not that bad. I particularly like the English actor's performance who plays the Commissar. The opening Ork scenes are excellent also.

I have a demo version of this. I must admit that I never got into it enough to give it a chance, but there was not enough control of the actions for my liking. It looked like a decent game, but I heard that it trouble with balance of the forces.

Hi Tom

There are two Mods available. I have used the Wargammer found here (unfinished but workable)

http://www.wargamer.com/flx/

and a new one: Final Liberation Chaos Mod.
Beta Chaos Modification by Jorge Gabitto. Search for Final Liberation in top left box.

Dear Friend:

I appreciate your interest. Of course there is no problem for me to have the mod posted in your site. Be also aware that I am completing a new campaign using the Chaos army. It is finished and I am in the process of playtesting it now. I have added a few more Chaos infantry units, Red, Blue, Green Demons, etc. and 4 new maps. You can play the Volistad campaign against the new Chaos Army. I am modifying the text files also. Please add a few lines about this if you can.

I share your goal of getting interest in the game again. I have contacted Mr. Ken Lightner from Holistic to see if we can get some help from them. We also need input about how to import/export artwork into the cel files. If can do this we can create whole new armies.

Yours,

Jorge Gabitto

I offered to assist with the coding of that game, but there was not enough interest. By the time I had found the mod the community seemed to have died.

The units were written in what looked like a C subset which I am familar with.

I will check out the new mods as although the game was limited, it was kinda fun :).

I would!

I'd love to know what the game is like.  And although I cant play it at home yet, I have my computer here at work to use it on.  I wouldn't mind coming to work then

I'll give you a list of things I dont want in return for it if you like (I must get round to writing down what I have for epic).

It's yours. Just PM me your details and I'll get it posted.

Like I said, you can have it for free...But if you happen to have any ork Tinbotz or Stompers you don't really want, I'll be happy to take 'em off your hands.  :D

Check out the thread in the trade forum.  There's a lot of stompas and other things going.  I think its called 'old school Orks' or something like that.

Just wondering what the system resources needed are for the final Liberation game.

I have got Chaos Gate to work, so if its about the same, I should okay.  Note-my computer was a freebie, so its a basic one.

That's a good question. I haven't been able to run the program on my last three computers. It's an old game and I do miss playing it. Although, I would have prefered that they had used a different engine for the game. I've never been a fan of SSI games.  :o

the final liberation and chaos gate games used pretty much the same resources. I have never tried it out on later versions of windows past '98. I found it a good game but with other games out at that time that were better I gave up especially since I was loosing to often  :p
