Post subject:  Epic Space Marine 2nd ed Battle Report

Hi everyone.

My name is Dave, and I'm new to the forums here. I live in Hamilton, New Zealand. I used to do all sorts of gaming back in the day, but my favorite game was always Epic Space marine (at least until 3rd ed came out ;D ).

Anyway, I've been doing some gaming recently with some fathers from my son's school, and convinced them to give Space Marine a try. Second edition seemed the logical choice, as it's pretty easy to teach, and it's what I know best. So I dug out my old figs (at least the ones I have painted), and we've had a couple of games so far, and they've gone quite well.

I wrote up a battle report for the second game, to go on a friends blog. This was a 3050pt match, Eldar vs Chaos. If you would like to have a look, the link is below. I may have gone a little overboard with it. In my defense though, I've been reading the Horus Heresy books lately, and it seems to have affected my writing.

Anyway, I hope you like it.

Cheers, Dave.

Welcome to the forum and welcome back to Epic!

Nice report!

As you mentioned, it is a learning curve. I would say that Eldar v Chaos isn't the fairest of match-ups. The Eldar have a fast, highly manoeuvrable force with powerful close combat units meaning Chaos have a big problem.

As you've indicated, more cover would help Chaos. Also, if you are playing one force with many skimmers against one on foot (as many Chaos units are) then I'd recommend trying to keep rivers out of the equation. The Eldar vehicles and cavalry units can ignore it while your Chaos troops have no choice but to bunch together on to the bridge, making your units nice targets.

The Chaos player should familiarise themselves with the Chaos cards. They are very useful and if you can avoid it don't use them to save Greater Daemons.

Anyway, these are just some suggestions, enjoy your return to the game!

Thanks guys.

Yeah, I didn't set up the terrain for this one, and a random roll for which side of the board chaos was on didn't favour them overly. When I picked the chaos force for this battle, I thought I'd included plenty of firepower for them, but 900pts of Banelord going down before firing a shot didn't help their situation.

Cheers, Dave.

Check out Net Epic Gold, it's the fan version of 2nd Edition & it makes a lot of minor improvements to play & some formation costs have changed - the Banelord is cheaper!

Awesome! Its cool to see others still playing this system. I still play it more than any of the other versions of Epic. Its just the easiest to introduce new players to.

Great report - me and my brother are looking to get into SM2 - Random question but how hard is it to play (I’m about a mid level gamer).

Thanks,

Rob.

It's pretty easy really. I've played with my 10 year old, no problem. The only complexity comes from the special abilities of some of the units, but even then it's not that difficult.

Cheers, David.
