I own them (I had the idea of doing some heresy era armies for epic a while ago), and they are indeed rather pretty. The books are rather large, a good few inches taller and wider than normal A4, and they have very large artwork in them. The art, just to clarify, is done by Sabretooth (who make the CCG's), and some of it (I would say) doesnt really have the consistency of the 'official' stuff. Most of the vehicles are the old style (not a bad thing, just interesting), and certainly some of the units are weird when you look at what we have now (20 strong formations entirely amred with Lascannons...). Basically, I really like the art, but some parts of it I dont find hugely satisfying. The background is relatively sparse (unless Im much mistaken its moslty taken of 'flavour text' cards for the ccg), but interesting. It does paint a fairly detailed picture of the heresy, with some interesting revelations and ideas. Im a big fan of the Legio Custodes (Space Marines among Space Marines), but they wont appeal to some, and there are some other similar intersting bits. Basically, I like them, but I will say my knowledge of the heresy before reading them was very sparse... One last point...you can often get them cheaper on Amazon... |

Thanks for your replies guys, I will look into them indeed as I am thinking about doing some pre-heresy type forces including Custodes myself. I find it rather ironic Reaversbane that you say: some of it (I would say) doesnt really have the consistency of the 'official' stuff | |

After looking through a friends copy, I passed on them. I did like some of the artwork, but for me, it was more of a coffee table art book then a useful reference. Just my .02 dafrca |

Based on the time I spent looking through it, I would say they were so light on true fluff to be a non-issue. Keep in mind that the Black Library calls them art books not background books (they do have a category called background books). so you can expect lots of art and little else. Its something like a paragraph of text every 2-4 pages. Over four books (as it will eventually be), it will probably be a fair bit, but as Dafrca says, they really are more 'art books'. I am however horribly biased in my opinion of these books pherhaps, as I have quite a large collection of art books, and they are something I really enjoy looking at

I have these myself. I like them very much from an art point of view. As one of my projects is to try and build heresy era armies I found this was really good for inspiration. As for background I found Adeptus titanicus and Space marine seems to have the backbone to what was fielded and how units were deployed. The fiction or 'history' is still nice to read and does compliment the pictures. At least this time round they have more to show regarding the art and the way stuff looked back then. Its a shame they didnt do stuff for that era as I would definate fork out some money for that range! |

Personally I like the Sabretooth art. It's a rereshing addition to the in-house GW art. However, the books include way too much Blanchitsu, or at least the first one did, so I probably will not buy them. Just a personal opinion, of course. I don't like Mr. Blanche's drawing style at all. Give me Mark Gibbons, David Gallagher and the like anytime. |

To be honest, Im not a huge fan of Blanche myself. He is quite good at conveying scale and scope, and he has shaped a lot of the imagery we associate with GW today, I also do kinda appreciate his strong pre-raphealite influences (from my somewhat lacking knowledge of art). I think his big contribution to GW is his art direction more than his actual art tho'. I do prefer the more 'produced' and 'precise' work of some of the other artists. Some of the pics in the books are either cgi, or heavily influenced/doctored by it, which are kinda interesting too. And it looks like book no. 3 is on the horizon, as apparently the limited ed. one is out next month. I think I'll wait for the normal version
