Hi all! I recently dug my greenskins out of the closet and was wondering how to get up to speed with WFB - I've not really played since the mid 90's and have no idea what I should be purchasing. Can I buy the rulebook without a big box of minis and cardboard terrain? Do I still have to get a separate box of cardboard cutout spells? And an army book? These things are very much on my mind ![]() ![]() |

The good news is that you can get the book without the models and buildings (although they're now including plastic bits of scenery, and the starter sets are quite worth it, with piles of models. The rule book by itself is hardback, and quite expensive. You don't need magic cards, you still need a few templates, and you still need an army book. I'm '90s vintage too, and have barely kept up with the changes (5 per rank and not 4 now, and charges are 2D6 not twice the normal move!); not played the latest version yet. |

Pick up one of the small 'island of blood' rulebooks off of ebay: these are the less expensive paperback versions that come in the boxed game and can be had for about £10 if yr lucky :-) |

I've been playing Warhammer Fantasy since 4th edition, and 8th edition is easily the most fun I've ever had playing the game. I guess a lot of the complaining has been that the new rules were such a departure to the previous ones that it forces established gamers to change the way they play, and a lot of established gamers just want to keep running their same combos over and over again. As soon as people start figuring out ways to exploit the new rules (inevitable in any game), they'll be back on the bandwagon. If not? Then there's seven other editions of this game to play with. We're tabletop gamers, not video gamers. We're not limited by our media. |

Try Warmaster. Or maybe Basic Impetus Fantasy. My issue with WFB is just from watching the game -- nothing seems to happen for a very long time. Warmaster is far more dramatic. |

Fun? Stick an horde against the opposing horde, roll buckets of dice, mercifully it's all over fairly quickly. |

The fun part of the new edition is that there are far more viable units than before (mostly infantry, though). The new rules managed to level the field dramatically, and with a few additions of randomness (like charge distance), the game is much less predictable than it was in 7th. In a recent tournament the top four was: 1) Ogre Kingdoms 2) Orcs & Goblins 3) Don't remember 4) High Elves For me, the most satisfying part is the rise of the infantry. WHFB armies suddenly look like armies. I prefer maxed out over min-maxed, which was the way of 7th. /Fredmans |
