So, my gaze for this week has turned to 40K Terminators (dont ask!). Looking through the possible range of models, and discounting any Space Hulk variants, I can clasify the historic range into three broad categories:

New plastic - These are the guys currently available. Multi-part plastic, larger bases, more dynamic.

New metal - The previous editions. A bit more dynamic, more variations, and loads of Chapter specific models.

Old metal - The original boxed set of eight, including a Terminator Captain and Librarian, and a Cyclone launcher that actually looks good! A lot more static than later sculpts.

Now, I have to admit that in general, GW minis have got better. Terminators, however, represent the exception to me. I really like the realy old school minis (including the original Grey Knights!). These guys should not be dynamic, and there is something a lot more imposing in the original models that is just not captured in later versions.

But, am I alone in this? Let me know.

Old metal, Terminators shouldn't be light when picked up!

I think it depends on the purpose of your project.  The multi-pose plastic lend themselves more readily to more extensive conversions, for instance.

I prefer the old metal ones, too.

While the new ones are a little spindley, they really are better models and they're so much easier to convert, personalise, etc. They're also a bit bigger, they fill that big base better.

Anything but the new plastic ones, and I'll tell you why:

I believe part of the reason why Warmachine and Hordes is doing so well is because of GW's switch to plastic.  My favorite example of this is to compare the Space Marine Dreadnought to the Khador Juggernaught, or any heavy warjack for that matter.  When you spend the $40 (or has the price gone up already?) on a Space Marine Dreadnought you would like to feel you got something for the money, and one of the more basic, yet subtle, ways to get that feeling is to have an item that weighs comensurate with its price.  If I'm going to plop down $40 on a single miniature then it had better be heavy.  But when you pick up the rather light, plastic Space Marine Dreadnought it feels... insubstantial.

Now pick up a Warmachine heavy warjack, or a Hordes heavy warbeast.  Those have got weight to them!  You *know* you got something for your money.  Never mind the fact that the heavy warkacks have the necessities (like knees), are cheaper, and better looking in my opinion.

Yeah, you can more easily convert plastic Terminators, and it might be lighter to carry a whole bunch of them compared to my Khador army, but when I put my rather heavy box of Warmachine Khador down and rub the ache out of my muscles from carrying the weight, I know I got something for my money...

I never really understood the whole attraction to metal because it's heavy.

There's just so much more you can do with plastic. I've done some serious, serious conversions with metal terminators and dreadnoughts, and inevitably just as I'm finished the plastic models have come out and such difficult conversions would be easy!

I have to agree with Blarg; there's something to be said for buying a hunk of metal. Beetlebacks and Imperators aside, it feels more satisfying to shell out big bucks for a mini that feels like it has substance.

Just to add to the confusion... I popped into my local GW yesterday (my wife works in a centre with a GW - thank goodness they dont sell SG stuff!). The new plastic Terminators actually look better in reality than they do on the web. I think that I still like the old style ones more, but a squad of six worked out at fifty six pounds plus postage! Ten of the new plastic ones work out at fifty pounds with no postage. So, I think that I will make my standard Terminator squads from the archives, and my close combat squads in the new plastics, since the more dynamic pose works better for close combat squads and the metal close combat body is not so good.

*sigh* More expense!  :O

No. The Cyclone, along with the Close Combat variants were released later. However, the boxed set did have the ultra cool Captain with PowerFist/Grenade Launcher, and the excellent Libraran in Terminator armour!

Quick question to those who may know - If I get a box of the new plastic Terminators, does it come with five helmet heads (enough for all Terminators to have their hats on)?

Thanks.

New Plastics... I dread to think how hard it would have been to drill out every head in this formation. And reposing them all... eek.
