I'm confused about the New fluff. Do Necrons still harvest? It's mentioned in the new codex as well, but nothing more. What are Necrons harvesting? Souls? If (still) yes, why?

They harvest bodies to experiment on them to see if they are suitable to be new "fleshy" bodies for them.

Edit - yes, mutilating livestock is bad and should not be done. Unless they are to be eaten.

If they only harvest for experiments, this seems ... Not logical.
Wouldn't be a few million body's be enough for that, aka one colonie?
Why do they still call some machines "harvester engines"?
It made sense when harvesting was in fact the primary reason for going to war. But now i can't see such prominent place for "harvest".
If I can find a reason that works for me and matches to the fluff I would be happy. I found the idea that Necrons go to war for an "alien" reason appealing.

Not all Necron Phaerons pursue the goal of reincanration. Quite a few only want to rule the galaxy as the Necrons once did.
