By the way, I do have a "detail plate" on my Shapeways store that demonstrates how well tiny details will print in whatever material you want to test them in:

I'm ordering one in FXD, as well, since I already have a couple in FD and FUD.

Did a test run on the new FXD material because I really wanted to see the quality. I have to say I'm actually fairly impressed. The striations are at the point that I'd honestly consider not bother sanding them down unless I was casting them. I didn't think it was going to matter that much but I was pleasantly surprised.

I must say it does look very clean, it will be interesting to see it once painted.

Hi!

Looks very clean as moredakka said. I'll be very interested to see the finished/painted model! :)

Painting is needed to prove this! :-)

By the way, for handling FXD (especially when casting) this thread might be interesting (keep on reading after the post I shared).

Thanks for posting the pics. I'll have to see up close, but I'm thinking that FXD (why not call it FRosted Extreme Detail, or FRED?) has now surpassed resin and metal and is now exceeded only by plastic. You have the minis in hand, would you agree?

I'm also eager to see more people fix up their models to account for the new material, or at least enable them for FXD printing. The price difference isn't very great but from your pictures the quality difference is.

Almost, but not quite. IMHO I need about 1/2-1/3 the work to clean up what I normally would using 2000 grit. Within 5 years I estimate we'll be at a resolution that likely foregoing is a possibility. I don't see 3D being cheap and commodity anytime soon, just making custom design work with high quality being democratized on the production side (the hard part is still and always will be having a good design)

That's good to know, and I think you're right on the design side.

They'll have to hurry. If Ted Kurzweil is right, we'll be able to upload our consciousnesses and paint and play with the 3d models virtually. At that point, the elusive dream of eating cheetoes and playing safely with minis will be a reality.
