Wow, that's a new one to me! I'll check over on the Shapeways forums and see if there's any chatter about it.

That's weird!

I only had a similar (but less traumatic) experience with Frosted Detail, but not with FUD; after some time without being cleaned, the oily residue (from Shapeways' cleaning) dried and gave the material a whitish very frosted finish.

It didn't make the material any more brittle, though, and once primed there was no difference between the models I painted immediately and the later ones; also, this never happened with FUD.

Right now, though, I usually make sure to wash my models with warm soapy water as soon as I receive them, and keep them closed in their ziplock bags until I can wash them.

Hope this helps!

I've had the two models in question a little over a year and a half IIRC. They were in a well lit room, but temperatures would never have been excessive. They were alongside stuff done in (the rather horrible) WSF and others in FD and they had no problems at all. The room is also full of FW, Spartan and others resin gear and none of that had any problems.

Well, I checked my huge amount of recent purchases and there seemed to be discoloring/yellowing on some of them and the baggies showed an oily residue. Some few ships seemed to be losing detail and showing a shiny look . I exclusively buy the models in the clear and frosted ultra detail options. If they were in any environment it would be room temperature at worst or markedly lower in one of my storage rooms. So, I just spent a good couple of hours rinsing them all of with warm soapy water. The ones that were discolored did have an oily feel to them that I rubbed off. I hope that fixes the problem.

Hmmm... when I receive an order, I usually soak them in Simple Green immediately. After a few days in that, I give them a rinse in soapy warm water, and, if necessary, a light scrub with an old toothbrush. I'm not seeing the same kind of problems in my models, but I'll dig out some older ones and see if I find anything amiss.

Me, too, I try to wash my models with an old toothbrush and warm soapy water; the oily residue (that is copious in some instances, and totally absent in others) is usually the leftover oil they use to clean the support wax from the model..

Look what I got... ;D More pics and details on my blog.
http://hordesofthings.blogspot.co.nz/20 ... icles.html

The Death Rays were smaller than I was expecting but still very happy with them.
The Obelisks from GrimDark were bigger than I thought! I think they would actually make a good range of alteranative Deathbot Pyramids, rather than Obelisks.

Material looks ok, still needs a bit of cleanup on the Death Rays, but checked and this is easy to do.

War Barge Details on the sides is difficult to make out, might do with being a bit more accentuated on the model. Also having the two main cannons on top elevated a little would be better I think, so they can point forwards. Will probably raise them a bit higher with some plasticard.

Massive order! :o

Is it all FD or FUD?
What material did you use for the GDB Obelisks?
