I just found, after thirty years or so, my copy of White Dwarf #142. This was the one that started my love of epic gaming because it contained the painting guide for the “Studio Army,” a giant 6000-point Blood Angels army. With the advent of 3mm scale More Epic Than Epic from Vanguard, I’m celebrating this event by building my own 3mm scale 2nd Edition Blood Angels army in the super bright and vibrant, over the top colors of the early 1990s. My first few transports are below. This feels like when the world was new. Such a trip, man.

The goal is 6000 points. Naturally some liberties will have to be taken: the Warlord Titan will probably be difficult to source unless I can twist an arm of a 3D printer-equipped friend of mine. Likewise, 3mm scale outriders aren’t there yet, so they’ll get jet bikes instead, which I’ve had to mash up some rules for using the Eldar as an archetype. But it’s looking promising so far!

Sounds like a nice chunky project! 3D printing is really great and I hope you get your force together using a balanced concoction of bribes and threats :)

Great idea!

For the Warlord, I'd just use an old plastic beetleback as it'll be pretty much truescale compared to 3mm Vanguard models!

Thanks guys! I managed to get my first Tactical Company primed and ready to paint up. And I’m getting new unit and detachment cards and order markers custom printed and diecut - I drew them myself, so that they include all the silhouettes and game stats.

The bases, by the way, are 1/16” laser cut plywood with a 1/8” hole in the center, in which I put a small ND magnet for storage. The black disc on top is a piece of plastic to hold the magnet in place.

This project is back at the top of my rotation! Next up: a Terminator Company. Also shown: my reconstructed army cards for the project, drawn by me, printed and pressed professionally by a local print shop. One or two cards have typos, but I’ll fix them when I get the Traitor army cards made.

Would love to know if there are any NetEpic Gold stats for the newer Marine Superheavies - Vanguard makes some great proxies and it’ll be a shame not to use them!

Thanks, guys! Having searched out a lot of material for the non-canon units in the Vanguard catalogue, I'm now making a series of "Experimental" cards to match up to the fun things like superheavy tanks and fast battle tanks that are now retconned into the Horus Heresy. I'm also experimenting this afternoon with a new Sons of Horus paint scheme - my last one ended up looking more like the Alpha Legion. And nothing against the Alpha Legion, but the true nemesis of the Blood Angels is the Sons of Horus - I mean, who betrayed them most deeply, and who killed their Primarch? Let's be honest here.

In the experimental units I have to say I stand on the shoulders of giants - my deep appreciation to Primarch and Squiggleamp whose prior work on the forum here has been my main source for stats.
