Inspiration suddenly struck!

And, to drag this place up from silence, I decided that after a single test run, I'd post it here.

Now if you guys'll be so kind as to give me a review of the basic rules, stuff I missed, things that don't make sense etc.

Btw, the game was nigh to drawn. I played myself to the end, and from the two lists at the bottom of the file, only an 'emperor' and a 'tyrant' were left.

I'm not sure I understood the whole thing but, we're talking about not only a different gaming system but also new ships ships right?

The "heights" thing is interesting, but isnt 2d6 a bit too much?

You got it. :)

Trying to emulate models from one gaming system with another system just isn't my thing, and probably wouldn't really work either.

About the height, I think it can be played with 1d6, but 2d6 gives quite a big range. At the end of my first test, the ships ended 4-5 points higher than they started, and some ships got even higher than that, so I used quite some of it's potential, and I doubt others wouldn't.

There's little to gain in realism in an open-space combat game by adding the 3rd dimension, and a whole lot of complications added.

Star Fleet Battles doesn't even include 3d movement!

Unless you're dealing with near-orbit situations, but even that's ... complicated, and there's little gain in adding a 3rd dimension there.

I beg to differ. Attack vector: Tactical

(by Ad Aspera games)

is an impressive 3-d space combat boardgame using newtonian movement (i.e. the real thing: you move by short acceleration bursts and then by inertia, the movement vectors add up continuosly etc.). All the ships and weapon systems are hypotesized using real-world scientific fact, faithly followed to an amazing degree of accuracy.

I own the pre-release version (back then it was called Delta V) and I can testify to the magnificence of the game design, which is utterly brilliant. Basically, all the ugly required math (the differential systems, trigonometry etc.) is hidden within the game components. You just look at the laminated sheets, check a couple of tables, and you're set.

They are now producing another game in the series set in the Honor Harrington universe. Attack Vector has also recently won the Origin award for best game design, I believe. I heartily recommend to check it out.
