Hi all,
I've liked to BFG models etc for a long time, and am considering dipping a toe in the water around Christmas time (I play 40K already). ?I was thinking of getting to starter box and playing around with the fleets therein to get the hang of the game. ?One thing i don't know about is what kinds of cruiser the chaos/imperial ships can be made into, and what the strengths and weaknesses of each one are. Any other basic n00b info would be good too!
Can anyone help?

Hi Fleetmaster! Welcome to Epicomms....
The starter box is an excellent first buy- you'll have all you need to play, and a good selection of ships to play around with for a while.
Once you have the box, and have read through it a few times you'll start to get a good feel of how the game plays, and how the various weapon types work. A good idea is not to glue the weapon pallets onto the ships before these first few games- soon you'll know how which weapons you prefer, and can arm your ships accordingly.
You can also decide which fleet style you prefer- Chaos is generally fast and can throw out lots of ordance, while the Imps have more armour, torpedoes, but are a little slower.
I'm sure you'll get many more posts (probably more helpful than this one, hehe ) from the other BFG players here.. but always remember- get stuck in, and have fun..

Thanks for the advice!
Oh, and what exactly is ordnance in the BFG sense?

Ordanance are things like Fighters, Bombers and Assault Boats which can be lauched from a ship's lauch bays, it also includes torpedos- (very few Chaos ships have torps though).
They are one of the main types of weapon, the others being Weapon batteries (big guns) and Lances (laser turrets).

Ok, I understand...
Another question: What classes of cruiser can be made from the :
Imperial cruiser kits?
Chaos cruiser kits?

Er... lets see.... from the basic rulebook (aka the Blue Book);
7 types of Chaos cruiser- Heavy cruisers; Styx, Hades, Acheron. Basic cuisers; Devestation, Murder, Carnage & Slaughter.
7 types of Imperial cruiser- Battlecruisers; Mars, Overlord. Basic cruisers; Lunar, Tyrant, Dominator, Gothic & Dictator.
As well as these, there are a couple more new variants, but wouldn't worry abpout these as a new player- the only one I have is an Armageddon class Imperial Battlecruiser. Hope that helps.

Thanks, that helps!
Perhaps one heavy cruiser and 3 normal cruisers on either side...
And a quick question on the ship profiles on the BFG website...
Does weapon strength increase as its numbers get higher (i.e. strength 6 battery is more powerful than strength 4 battery)?
Does armour value decrease as its numbers get higher (i.e. 6+ is worse than 5+)?

Quote (Warmaster Nice @ 24 2004 Sep.,21:21) | And finally: yes, 6+ is worse armour than 5+ because it is harder to score a 6 and above (1:6) than it is to roll 5 or higher (2:6 or 1:3) |
Sorry WM.. absolute nonsense...
No.. actually, I think it's just your wording- 6+ armour is the best a ship can get, as an attacking ship will have a 1:6 chance of hitting you with a shot, compared to 2:6 or worse (which is basically what you said)...

Great news! Im getting the boxed set for christmas!
A few more questions...
I know the various Imperial segmentums have different ship liveries, but what are they?
I heard somewhere that BFG ships have to move every turn. ?Is this true, and if so must they move their full distance?
Also...
Fleet lists! (Very very basic)
IMPERIAL: 1 Overlord, 2 lunars and 1 Dominator or Tyrant (which one is more powerful?)
CHAOS: 1 Hades, 2 Murders and one Carnage/Slaughter (Again, which one is more powerful?)
I know these are all very n00bish questions !

Ships do not have to move their full move distance- iirc you must move a minimum of half normal distance, or less (even stopped) if you go on the 'Burn Retros' special order.
Fleet colours- there are no hard & fast rules here really- the Gothic sector's is a dark green, and the Armageddon fleet has a brownish main colour, but it is basically up to you to decide how you paint your ships, as there is loads of variation throughout the sector fleets, and there are hundreds more fleets than the few already documented in GW background....

The basic plastic fleets are nice, but I'd quickly buy a battleship and some smaller types.
For Ork fleets, ships are easy to convert.

Plan for Imperial fleet:
Fleet: 1 Overlord, 2 lunars and 1 Dominator.
Tactics: The fleet advances slowly in a sigle chevron which allows torpedos, nova cannons etc to be fired at advancing enemy, and also allows broadsides to be fired at anything that gets close enough.
Plan for Chaos fleet:
Fleet: 1 Hades, 2 slaughters and 1 devastation/murder
Strategy: Slaughters broadside one flank of enemy, who are then "broadsided" by Hades and attacked by devastations ordnance.
Whaddya think?
