You can use a Mars in several ways- as a stand-off ship, like you want to, there are several choices- You can have it hang back from a cruiser group or a few escort squadrons, launching bombers, and using it?s guns to finish off what the other ships begin, or you can team it with a battleship with long ranged guns (Retribution for example), and use the NC more...
All ships in BFG are very adaptable.... the game is not like 40k, where some units are massively better against certain other units. The Mars will work well however it is used really, as long as you remember the golden rule of BFG which is ?Concentrate your firepower?....

Right, I'm planning on using the mars to advance slowly behind two lunars/gothics and supplying bomber waves, fighters for protection against enemy ordnance and NOVA SHELLS (drool)!
Which cruisers may work well accompanying a Mars?
