I will have to say yes, shooting lances is better "first" than "later" but it depends on what amount of lances and what kind of ship you are shooting at.

I play Necrons and let me tell you that for my Tombships, I will not brace them unless I being shot with a gazillion lances and/or gazillion firepower. The odds for a tombship are pretty similar 2+ or 4+

Now if you are shooting a shroud with lances and/or firepower...Yes I am bracing, 2+ is way better than 5+.

I hope this helps!!! :)

If you BFI against weapon batteries, you will be hit on 4+ which is 3 times more hits against you than if you don't. Of course the 2+ save usually makes up for that, but you will pay for it in the following turn with half FP and no other special orders.

Even so, it may sometimes be worthwhile bracing vs batteries with Jackels or Dirges because of the vast improvement to their 6+ save.

It will be less of an advantage to brace vs batteries with a Shroud or Scythe because their save is already 5+. In most cases I only BFI with these ships if I see some lances also pointed my way.

Tombships should never, never, never brace against weapon batteries. With a 4+ save, their odds of getting damaged remain unchanged. Tombships should only ever brace against lances, and even then its a judgement call on whether or not you feel the Tombship can weather the storm and weather it is in a position to return fire next turn.

I guess this all equates to me realizing that vs the smaller Necron ships, you might try firing your batteries firts, and if the Necron player does not BFI, you might get a lucky point or two of damage that you may or may not get if he braces.

It also occurs to me now that the most advantagous time to fire batteries first vs Necrons is when there are two potential targets. If you fire your batteries at one and see it brace, then fire your lances at the second one and force it to brace as well. After all, the most reliable way to beat the Necrons is to force all of them to turtle under their armour saves the whole battle.

When you have a lot of WBs. The Necrons will still have to risk either BFI-ing or not. Lots of dice means better chances to roll 6s and if the Necron doesn't BFI then he could well take 1 or 2 hits.

Ah... But you forget the Necrons have "ward" saves. 4+ on Tombships, 5+ on the cruisers, and 6+ on escorts.

Funny how a post on basic strategies stoped after one tip about shooting one weapon system or another at necs and developed into a full fledged discussion on that! :p hehehe

Anyway, some more basic tips

1) Concentrate firepower. Shot at a single target with all the firepower you can bear in a single turn. Cripple/destroy and move to the next. Causing massive damage to one target is much more useful than causing a few points of damage across the enemy fleet

2) Shot at stuff from more dangerous to least dangerous for you. If you are short of air cover, for example, try to take the enemy xcarriers first.

3) If you are imperial, use that prow of yours as long as you can, and then try to shot both broadsides at once.

4) torpedo runs work great with torpedo escorts that can shot the torps so that they pass over 2+ enemy bases. Makes fopr nice chain damage :) escorts are good here because they can manoeucvre into position more easily to shot them down the enemy's throat.

5) In general, shot your WB before your lances. WB are affected by blast markers, while lances aren't. So, you shot your WB when there are no BM in contact with the enemy shiop and then the lances.

6) Against eldar, it is handy to have WB. Lances suck against them.

7) Against necrons, have lances. WB suck against necrons and lances rule

8) Nova Cannon is a wonder weapoon. Sometimes it will give you the game, and sometimes it will play pants. it is a good weapon, but do not overly relay on it to win games.

9) Chaos cruisers are good and cheap, and tend to have massive WB. Those excel at close range (15 cm or less) so it is recommended to close down and shot the enemy right in the eye. That works better than opening the distance and shoting from far away

10) Chaos is also good at boarding. MAarines as well, but they do not have the mark of khorne. The mark of khiorne and the +1 for being chaos give chaos ships a goosd chance at boarding actions. It is tricky but it can mean a destroyed ship per turn. The downside is that you can sustain damage in return.

11) Imperial ships can ram enemy ships to good effect, even frontally. I have seen this looked down by a lot of admirals, but a friend of mine does it when he can and he has an impressive record of crippled/hulked ships by raming them. The 6+ armour of the imperials really help them here. The best thing would be ram and shot torps at point blank range (literally!, no 1mm separation between ships!!) at the same time. Can cause quite some massive damag eon the enemy, or force a Brace for Impact! reaction on them.

Hope that helped. Tips from the top of my head.

Cheers,

Xavi

PS: long time no see, you gits ;)

Generally, you're right enough: WB's first then Lances if shooting at necrons. The only time you might wish to reverse the order is against multiple targets at different ranges. Then you might choose to use your WB's against the closer target, and save the lances for the more distant ship. Against a single ship however, what you said stands up well enough.
My own experiences of using Necrons has shown me that WB's are generally nothing to worry about, provided you stay more than 30cm away and are positioned either abeam or moving away when it comes to your opponent firing back. Lance heavy fleets will get round their armour 6 and may force BFI reactions, but wont do much more (you'll still hit on a 4+, and Necrons will get a 2+ BFI save). Even braced, Necron ships can still be dangerous, remember their own WB's always count as closing, and lances will bypass shields on 6's to hit, so I wouldn't say you've nothing to worry about from a braced Necron ship, just less to worry about than if it wasnt...

You mean Lances before batteries when shooting Necs right?  Once the Necs brace, their amor drops to 4+ and they have to make a lot more battery hit saves.

Actually, a BFI necron cruiser is as vulnerable to battery fire as an unbraced necron. 6+ to hit and 4+ save is as efficient to resist WB damage as 4+ to hit and 2+ save statistically.

So, you do not care if he braces or not when shooting your WB at him

Best,

Xavi

The 4+ save only applies to the Tombship, in which case you are correct that statistically there is no difference.  Every other Necron ship has a less effective "passive save",  but in general, I've found that it's easier to force the Necs to brace, then pile on insane quantities of battery fire- thus they have more chances to fail their save as opposed to a 1 in 3 chance of saving against perhaps 1 or at best 2 battery hits against armor 6.  I suppose it is more a matter of preference, but I know for certain that batteries suck the third knuckle of Russ when it comes to killing Necs- only against escorts is the effects noticable.

Then again, I'm mostly a Dark Eldar player so I am able to force braces with H&Rs from boats and impalers as well as lances :-)
