Initially I wasn't overly keen on the idea, but then I remembered Homeworld: Cataclysm, one of my old PC favorites, and what you describe sounds very very much like "The Beast",  some kind of organism which overpowers and consumes the crew of an "infected" ship, and uses their biomass to form new neural pathways and control points and what not in the ship.

Well actually :) I've just ordered some tyranid infantry sprues from ebay and plan on getting a few chaos and imperial cruisers soon, so yes. Depending on delivery times and my schedule I should have something by the end of january.

Love the idea.  I have to agree that it is very reminicent of Homeworld - Cataclysm.

With regard to background, in the Desert Raiders novel there is a description of the interior of a tyranid ship which comprises a sizeable part of an imperial vessel...food for thought.
