Let's see if we can't put together a comprehensive "What Fleet should I play?" list so we can create a sticky (single post locked) thread for people interested in the game...
This current thread is designed to be our basis for discussion while putting together said list...So please comment...I've had expirience with most of the fleets but some of it is biased and some is incomplete...

Chaos and Imperial are generally concidered the core two fleets, with the most new models and the easiest to learn (using very little diviation from the core rules)

Imperial: Best all around mixture of weapons...They have some cool stuff (Nova Cannons) and a large diversity of models including the ability to mix fleets with SM...

The ships generally look like upside-down naval vessels, and they include plastic cruisers (inexpensive)...

Chaos: Faster than IN with longer range weapons...They lack Light Cruisers and Torpedoes but more then make up for it in AC...In addition they have some very interesting unique ships and rules (Planet Killer, Deamonships)...

The ships look like a spiky version of Star Destroyers but given the deamonic nature of the fleet there is ample room for conversion/customization, they are also the only other fleet with plastic cruisers (inexpensive)...

Eldar (Corsairs): Fast and Maneuverable...They use a very different set of rules from most of the other fleets requiring much different tactics...They can be very powerful or wiped out quickly depending on how they are played...Lances, AC and Escorts are much more heavily used than most other fleets...Additionally they are expensive (points wise) so a little money goes a long way, however you also tend to be outnumbered...

The ships are reminiscent of Mimbari and Mon Calamari cruisers...

Orks: Difficult to play but very characterful...There is a lot of randomness to this fleet and the ships are very cheap (points wise) so you tend towards more ships then almost any other fleet...

The ships look like porrly welded fish...

Necrons: A very powerful fleet with many of its own rules...While they completely lack ordinance they have more then enough other weapon systems and speed to make up for the lack...

The ships have a cressent theme combind with a futuristic Egyptian feel...

Tyranids: While you will frequently loose control of them due to instinctive behavior they can still be a very powerful fleet...They have some unusual rules but their ships are inexpensive (points wise) with a fair amount of firepower so even if a few ships wander off temporarily you still have the numbers to be useful...They also have some interesting "close combat" weapons for boarding and ramming...

The ships provide the single best opportunity for conversion...They are most often made from bitz of 40K and Epic tyranids...

Dark Eldar: Very limited model selection, and the worst rules from the Eldar and IN...They are a VERY difficult fleet to play well...However they have character and some interesting rules...

The ships look like spiky versions of the craftworld Eldar ships...

Tau: While the Tau use the standard rules they have some interesting twists...They tend to be heavy on the ordinance with a fair amount of normal firepower to back them up...The Tau lack the shielding of other fleets, but have a higher number of turrets making them very strong against ordinance heavy fleets...Tau fleets tend to be cruiser heavy which makes them an expensive ($$$ wise) fleet to build, especially concidering the relitively low cost (points wise) of the ships themselves...

There are currently two differant lines of Tau ship models...
The Specialist Games line consists of very blocky, hammer-headed ships...they are big, metal and expensive...
The Forge World line much more closely resembles the 40K Tau vehicles...They are cheaper and more astheticaly appealing however they are much harder to obtain...

Eldar (Craftworld): For the most part they are simply an extention of the Eldar Pirates...They use most of the same rules and tactics and are visually similar...While the CE tend towards more powerful escorts the CWE have much more efficient cruisers...

The ships are simmilar to the CE without the giant sails (replaced by stubby fins)...

IN = Imperial Navy
AC = Attack Craft (Fighters, Bombers, Assault Boats)
CE = Corsair Eldar
CWE = Craft World Eldar

I agree with a lot of your analysis. I should also point out that the Spotters Guide was originally started to fill a similar purpose... now if I could just find the time and resources to put it into some workable state...

Anyway, I think that we should also point out that the Imperial and Chaos fleets are the only ones with plastic cruisers, and are probably the 'basic' fleets with a minimum of special rules.

Also, the nature of Imperials make it a very straight-forward fleet, best used head on to the enemy.

Necrons - they are a bit difficult to play, as it seems like you are doing so well until you add up the victory point total.

You also missed the Space Marine fleet - which are interesting as they are a difficult fleet to use.

Ack!!! ?How could I have missed SM???
Someone else want to make a post for them?  I have little expirience with them and besides, I can't think of how to describe their ships :;):

Anyway, the comments about plastic cruisers are definately valid...It's a key selling point as is the one about Chaos and IN being core fleets (and constantly getting new ships)...

I'm not so sure about adding tactics though (using the IN fleet head on)...I might be misunderstanding though...

Sorry. I agree that tactics should be kept out as otherwise it is a whole new (and very large) thread. I dont have much experience with Marines either, otherwise I would chip in.

That was my general though...If we wanted to we could start a thread for each fleet tactics (not sticky)...Then again we could also just wait until it comes up...*shrug*...

I could probably throw together a fleet description but I'm at a loss to describe the looks...And I've edited the original post to include the suggestions (IN and Chaos stuff)

Oh, and I emailed Andy chambers asking for Epicomms to be put on as the alternate forum for BFG as well (given that a number of people on the old BFG forums expressed displeaure at email groups)...

Nice work on that "What Fleet should I play?" theme!
Unfortunatly I cannot help out with the SM subject yet, the friend I play the most is putting together a SM fleet so maybe (hopefully) in a couple of months I can have some insight on it...

Anyone had any thoughts on how to describe the look of the SM fleet?  that's pretty much all we're missing at this point...I can get the tactical side I'm just at a loss for the description...

Ok the whole I agree with all ur points.
I think ur discription of Orkz should be re-worded as they aren't differcult "to play" but "to win"
Playing Orkz is very simple... charge forward all gunz blazing and ram every ship within range. As far as Im aware there is no other way to play them :;):
