It's too bad, because I think a good conversion from Armageddon to 40K would be swell. There have been a bunch of new units released, and I'd be curious to see how they were implemented. The Ork Landa might be fun to try...though I can't imagine it ever taking off again after it set down. I wonder if I could treat it as a ballistic missile with transport, or just a transport that becommes an immobile vehicle... |

I recall there was a lot of discussion of ability point costs on the old majordomo mailing list. Many of the special abilities for E40k units seemed to have very consistent point costs and there was at least a rough guideline established for creating new units. There were many houserule army lists created that more or less used those values. I don't have a consolidated list and my memory of such things is long gone. There might be a few people around here that would have something but most of the folks that "founded" Epicomms were the NetEpic guys that disliked E40K, so I sort of doubt it. The problem, as with all point systems, is that if you add an ability to a minor unit, it is not as valuable as if you add it to a much more powerful unit. To use an extreme example, giving a Rough Rider the Cavalry movement ability is obviously worth a lot less than if you give the same movement ability to a Warhound titan. It's probably not possible to have a truly universal formula but they can be good guidelines for starting points. |

Hi there, I know that this topic or thread is quite ancient, but I have once cracked the points cost formula for the Epic 40K system. If there is anyone interested in this pointlist I?ll have a look at my documents back home and post it in here. Bye |

A long time ago, I managed to calculate the formula you are looking for. Do you still need it? |

Here's a link to a post by Alan Brain on the epic mailing list, discussing suggestions for adding things to Epic 40K, and with a suggested point formula. epic list link Here's the text: The following should be done, IN ORDER: 1. Try to make an old unit just a new model for a new unit in the same army. Thus an Ork Battlewagon should certainly include Bonebreaka, Bonecruncha and that Goff thing with the arms on the front whose name I forget. 2. If 1) doesn't fit, try to copy a unit from a different army. If you do this, you may have to bump up the pts a tadge for rarity. About 10% seems right. 3. If 2) doesn't fit, try to make it a variant on an existing unit. Thus, an Ork Gobsmasha might have a FP of 2 and AF of 1 instead of the other way round. 4. If 3) doesn't fit, try to make a unit using existing mechanics. Existing Mechanics includes such items as: Cavalry, Jump Pack, Rampage, Hero, Save, Heavy Weapons, Artillery etc D3 + X for AF 5. if 4) doesn't fit, try to vary the existing mechanics. Thus the infamous WD Space Wolves. Try to make the abilities as generic as possible. So, for example, say you wanted rules for Apothecaries and TechMarines. So make sure they apply to Painboyz and Mekaniaks as well. Best would be if the "Repair" ability provided an additional Save to one friendly non-War Engine unit within 5cm. And would include all the above, Techmarines (who cause a 'save' by repairing bolters, armour etc) or Painboyz (who use a medical squigg to make the dead walk ) Only if that doesn't work, do you as a last resort introduce completely new rules. IMHO of course.... Formulae for costs. =================== These are not "official", and hopefully we can get better ones in future. Here is a Formula for determining points value of new units ( ( Speed/10 ) + (Assault Factor x 2 ) + ( Firepower x Range / 15 ) ) x ( Armour / 3 ) Firepower of Anti-Tank shots is 2, but then you add +5 to the total for every AT shot (for compatibility with FIREPOWER. Alternatively, use 3 for a better result). Firepower of Disrupts and Barrages is 2. Firepower of Death Rays is 4. Add + 5 pts for Hero/Save ability. Add +50% for skimmer. Add +10 for Psyker. Add +2 for Rampage, infiltrate, jump packs, cavalry etc. The formula for War Engines (typo corrected 26 Sept 1999) is ( ( Speed/10 ) + (Assault Factor x 2 ) + ( Firepower x Range / 15 ) + Transport ) x ( Armour / 11) x (hits + shields) |

seems this point cost formula does not work very well... there are any concerns with the actual point costs (some pieces are too low-costed, others too high...)? |

Post subject: | Re: Point cost formula |
Hey folks! Sorry for resurrecting this long dead thread.... I would be interested in having a somehow valid point cost formula (some people here said that they know it). The reason is simple. I want to give Epic 40k a try, since I like it's simplicity and speed (I have the armies, but I don't have TIME). Lots of units are covered in the ruleset or have been streamlined and merged into one group of units (like Ork Battlewaggonz). Stil there are some units missing... I have found rules for Imperial Knights, but I'd like to field the Eldar counterparts as well. Does somebody have rules for them or a good idea how to create them? Thanks in advance! |
