Yup, its all down to perspective. And I have to say, Even I've come down to earth lately & am trying to get the cash together for an order of 50 Sprues. But thats just 10 of each of the 5 types available so I have an "emergency store".
10 is the minimum sprues I would ever recommend to someone for starting an army especially since they went down in price. With 10 Sprues you have enough troops from any of the races to field a varied force and have a good game.
But then again, there's always going to be part of me that says "Who wants a good game when you can have a MASSIVE game " - my wallet, however is the force bringing me to more modest views!

"Funding" ($), as in the "real" world, drives allocation of military spending. ?"A billion here, a billion there, pretty soon you're talking about Real money ! " - a former U.S. senator . ? That's another reason why I limit myself to one or two vehicle det. per type dating back to SM1. (+ I collect all the armies, past, present [and future]) ?Although I have hundreds of Infantry stands, 'cause just like in the real world, they are less expensive and being a former Grunt, the strength of any force lies with it's Infantry. ?Of course I could be a little biased ? !! ? ?That being said, I try to keep my forces based on a combined arms team. ?And most of my armies are 50/50 - Veh. to Inf., (+ staying within the guidelines provided by the rules) and like Primarch said, in the past Infantry sprues (which did include some light vehicles) came 10 to a box, so that's what I based my unit organizations on. ?And as always, I remain(ed) "flexible" ...

I want to thank many of you for helping me feel better. When I desided to re-enter the world of Epic I went on a buying spree like never before. I was feeling guilty about the "massive hord" I collected up. That was until I read some of these emails. Now I realize I have almost nothing when held up to others.
Now to finish painting the stuff (about one fourth is painted) and then see if I can do another run

Well yesterday I ordered 15 sprues of Orks 3 of Eldar and 3 imperial guard. I am now wondering if I ordered enough Guard and Eldar though. I dont collect Impy Guard, but need a force to play against. And my Eldar stuff is all already painted, so I could order a large amount of those 'in case'

Yeah, I would do that if were you. These things are going fast. People are getting stingier with their trades. If you happen to buy from e-bay, which oddly enough are six blocks from my house, be prepared to give up your big toe 'cause they aren't cheap. That is, if you can find unpaited unglued things in the first place. I need to get some Eldar, too. Thanks for reminding me.

I noticed things were hotting up on ebay. I think 15 sprues of Orks should do me fine. I had to get them though, since like you said, unpainted unmade infantry is hard to find. Even harder to find, is Orks not on square bases. I have been taking them off the squares and putting them on strips.
To do this requires the use of a sharp knife. I now have two fingers with plasters on.
I am thinking of ordering another 5 Eldar and guard. As I play epic on my own (loser) I dont require that much. If I can though, I'm gonna take two completed armies to my gaming club, and try to introduce people to it.

Ah, don't worry about your hands. Mine look as if they were run through a meat grinder. I get cuts I don't even remember getting. Just think of it as having manly hands. You play on your own? As in by yourself? Do you ever cheat?

All the time, but the opponent is yet to notice.
I try not to, so that I can have balanced games, and accurate opinions. Occasionally however, there will be times when an Ork horde on double orders that roll a 1 will suddenly be allowed a re-roll, or a Shadow swords to hit roll of a one will be rolled again.
I know I shouldn't, but when things should be a certaintity, I dont want luck altering the game. I want to suffer that crippling hit from a Volcano cannon, etc, so that I can work tactics from the experiance of getting wasted.

That works. If you are trying to figure out tactics and such. Although, I believe there is no such thing as a certainty. The old s**t-happens rule gets thrown into life too often. The chaos factor, if you will.
