Well ... the easiest choices, IMO are the long rectangle or original square ... ^-^

I now prefer the look of circular bases most of the time:

I like all the bases and I am always impressed how people use different kinds, especially in the same army. I kind of think the square ones look better for command units and support weapons, but they can make things difficult to paint for the former, unless you are painting them before mounting. Makes it look like the command units are huddling together discussing tactics. But I do agree with the designers that the rectangle ones are easier to paint. There can be more individual attention not only easiily given to a single figure on a stand of 5, but also seen. But growing up in the early days, they still strike me as a little odd. But they do look better on the board lined up behind cover and whatnot.

Warmaster changed things for me. I was so impressed with the command models for example, like the Empire General, on a chair with his feet up, dicussing tactics with an officer. I thought that was just genius, even though it would look ridiculous lining him up with a unit of troops. But the lesson I got from it, is to try and make a stand its own diorama, and use the best stand for it to do it. Those are the models I am the most impressed with. Not overly done, just enough to give it character. That being said, it seems easier to do with the rectangle bases for reg troops, and smaller ones for commanders.

Im a big fan of the "tablet" style bases, similar to the bases used in flames of War.

Here is a squad of OTC, on a tablet base.

Don't like the 'strip' bases as it kind of forces all your infantry into looking like a Napoleonic style firing line or else you have to hide them 'side on' against terrain in certain circumstances and I 'hate' the cheesy side on crab charge!!!

I'm re-basing all my Dark Angels onto round bases as to me these look the most aesthetically pleasing.
The Flames of War tablet style bases would be my second choice.
The old, old 'square' bases would be my 3rd choice.

To echo others though, its all a matter of taste and what's acceptable with your group.

I am using the strips and will continue doing so to maintain coherency. But if I were to start over again, my preference is round bases. That's the most dynamic and natural.

I like my guard in strip bases and my more elite heroic/infamous units like Marines get round (TMG actually). Someone did coffin shaped bases custom cut by Fenris IIRC for their necrons. I completely expect to redo my 'Crons this year and plan to steal this idea shamelessly :D
