Three ... Two ... One ... Launch. Marines are inbound, repeat, Marines are inbound.

Going for the Imperial hat trick. IG, AM and now the Adeptus Astartes.

I probably won't finish this in 2013, so it might leak into 2014. But I'm going to try.

I'll start with trying to get some opinions before I get too far into assembly:
1. Predators and the other Tanks. Are they a "required" unit? None seem very good by their stat line (and I don't currently own any ... so might have problems procuring any). Would it look "weird" to not have any? I do have 8 Land Raiders ... will those fill that role?

2. Devastators in Tactical Formations. I might be able to get an extra Devastator Formation if I limit/eliminate the Devastators in the Tactical Formations. Would this look "weird"? How many do you typically put in (1 devastator per 5 marines? or 1 per 10?)

Now onto the first picture:

I'll post a list of what I think I can assemble given what I currently have in a bit.

Not having any tanks is a little strange, but not insane (though I personally love Whirlwinds).

I do one Missile Launcher per 10 Marines in my Tacticals (and four per 10 in my Devastators).

What chapter were you thinking?

If you need to stretch them only using them on devestators is fine provided it's obviously clear what you are seeing. If you are using a made up chapter (or an official chapter that happens to do this - read: Blood Angels) think to change an aspect of the paint to make devestators be distinctive (blue helmets on BA devestrators for instance)

@Simulate Knave: I actual do have some whirlwinds. Just no predators or vindicators. It sounds like I shouldn't worry too much about it.

@jimmyzimms: I was thinking of painting them blue. I have greenish guard and red titans, so blue marines seem to make sense :-). I guess that would make them Ultramarines. I think I'll put 4 missile launchers on each devestator stand (and one tactical or a leader on each). Then sprinkle any remaining devestators througout the tacticals. I suspect I'll be able to field 5 tactical formations & 3 devestator formations if I do that.

Thanks!

It's October, time for the September update.

This is everything assembled in their cases. Please excuse the blurry pictures. As always, click on the pictures for a bigger version.

This includes:
5 Tactical formations (1 Chaplain, 1 Librarian, 1 Supreme Commander, 2 Captains) (Enough rhinos to transport 4 of these formations)
3 Assault formations (1 Chaplain, 1 Librarian, 1 Captain)
3 Devastators formations (1 Chaplain, 1 Librarian, 1 Captain)
2 Terminator formations (1 Chaplain, 1 Librarian)
3 Dreadnoughts
3 Thunderhawks
2 Whirlwind formations
2 Landraider formations
3 Bike formations (1 Chaplain, 1 Librarian, 1 Captain)
4 Hunters solo
1 Thunderbolts Fighters Squadron
2 Drop Pods

I think it comes out to around 6,000 points.

The three blank stands, I was thinking of using some extra plastics to make up objective markers using some of the spare/leftover plastics I ended up with.

Another update. Got sick for a few weeks, so I'm not quite where I want to be, but it's all still coming along.

The underlying color is done (Aliatoc Blue base, Drybrush Skink Blue, Wash with thinned down Asurman Blue).
Everything is very very blue at the moment. Next up I'll be picking out details for the foreseeable future (in white and dark grey with the occasional splash of yellow).

The whole army to-date:

Had some other shots, but they came out too blurry to use.

Looking good so far. Talk about army painting, how do you fight boredom when doing every color at once? I can only manage to stay motivated by finishing units, to the detriment of uniformity on occasion admittedly.

Thanks!

The answer to boredom is simple really ... I'm insane :-).

Actually, so far it hasn't been too bad. Most of the work I've done has been done with "the big brushes" (i.e. base coating, dry-brushing, washes). Now that I'm starting the detail work I might break it into more manageable chunks.

I've also been trying to brainstorm ways to simplify the detailing. I'm trying to make a tiny stamp of the Ultramar "U" out of green-stuff, that I could use on flat surfaces. So far I haven't been patient enough (I need to make intermediate shapes and let it dry completely ... I always try to do too much in one shot and end up wrecking it).

I was also thinking of trying to cut stencils of some common ultramarine symbols. Not sure if either of those ideas will work (I'll probably end up free-handing everything ... and my free-handing isn't that great ... but I'll get a lot of practice if I go that route).

I hear ya on the free handing, looking at a similarly sized force of Imperial Fists here. At least the fist is close to a blob. ^^

Stencils sounds tricky on these small miniatures but may perhaps work on the vehicles?

Relabeled this a ToEG 2014 post.

Should be able to complete it within a year :-).

Holidays and other stuff (funerals, unexpected house guests, and the resulting backlog at work) has kept me from spending the time needed to finish this off in 2013.

I ended up giving up on the stencils and stamps and have been busy freehanding way too many "U"'s. I'm getting better at it.

Looking forward to seeing this lot finished :) and you're right, that is a lot of blue!

I finished!!!

Took a bunch of pictures, but the lighting turned out really aweful. That was about 2 weeks ago and I still haven't found time to go back and take more pictures. I'm thinking I'll get all my Imperial Forces out for a global photo shoot sometime (about 18k worth).

This will probably be the last epic army I'll paint for a bit. I have Orcs and Eldar, but I think I might paint some 30 mm stuff first.

As always, click on the pictures for a bigger versions.

Very nice Marines!

They're not required, but I like to take some of these and do well with them. I normally run an armoured SM army with a formation of Land Raiders (plus a single upgraded Land Raider attached to my 2 tactical and 1 devestator formation) plus a Vindicator formation and 1-2 formations of Predators (Predator Anhilators are better than Destructors).
