Hello everybody!

I haven't painted epic miniatures for almost a full year (nor played), so it's about time to get started again. Peoples I know have invited me to play and looking at the piles of lead in my drawer, I thought it prudent to begin a new army and lo and behold a new year means another TOEG - what an opportunity for me !!! ;D

So I had these csm minis but didn't feel for a regular black legion, and I didn't particularly like any of the chaos powers colour schemes, well of course Khorne is always fun being red and all, but my latest army was red, and I had all these tzeentch minis, but then again my first army was blue and yellow - oh well, you see this could take while (actually it took the better part of a year).

Finally a painting challenge on a Danish forum got me started - the chaps on the forum had fallen in love with the new forgeworld horus heresy range, but since I don't play 40k (which is marginally an improvement of ludo), I thought of painting my csm force in Horus Heresy colours!!! Which meant I could paint my Thousand Sons bright red :o

But nuf talk, now pics (or pic)!

I chose a scheme from the Visions book from memory. Think it works alright. One guy from the Danish epic subforum suggested painting the loin cloth white or bone, but my instincts tell me no.

A thing I've thought of changing is the wash since I've used a thinned regular colour with no dish wash in it so it has not distributed itself like I would have liked, but then again these are playing pieces so there is a limit to the amount of work I care to throw into the foot sluggers.

Hope you like it! Comments more then welcome...

Cheers,
Thomas

Interesting to see them in red, suits the minis well I think. Very interesting terrain in the background as well :)

Personally, I agree, white/bone would be best to add contrast. Sorry :D

Cheers, Apoc. Perhaps I should try it, have thunk it for the elites (can't recall their name) but was then thinking white trims for elites (as per the Visions book). I have 40+ stands completed to washing stage just waiting for details so an extra colour shouldn't be too time consuming. Problem is plain bone is boring, I'd have to highlight just a little...

The terrain piece is a larger industrial building, the chaps are standing on a flat roof. I'm building my own table and have 7-8 larger buildings put together from scraps, bits and regular 6mm buildings. But I'm nowhere near completion, having decided to build eldar objectives, ork buildings and paint another Blood Bowl team also.

They look good! Perhaps the loincloth should be a different shade of red? At the moment it's hard to tell what is armour and what isn't. But they're your models so you can paint them however you like ;)

Yay, more 1k Sons! The more the merrier! :D

Just last month I started a pre-heresy force as well - have a look in my hobby thread if you like!
(http://taccmd.tacticalwargames.net/view ... 3&start=15)

As to your first stand, more contrast would do good imho!
White (shoulder) rims are used for rank & file troops, but white/bone loin cloth can be found through out the whole chapter.
I modeled some basic MK7s cloth between their legs and think it ads nice contrast! :)

Keep them coming!

Good point Rob, they are rather one block red - I've actually painted my terminators hull red with the intention of blending up to a bright red but that failed miserably, so I changed gears and shaded with hull red instead although the shade doesn't particularly well in that picture.

Cheers, Gonzo, and kudos on your sons!

I see the point yall making and will try a bony loincloth perhaps with some white highlight. If it gets too bright, the cloth can always get a sepia wash with the base.

Actually I have 3x Garden of Moor still in boxes (once got a deal on them) and I have seen people use them for EA. But my buildings are a mix of the old Adeptus Titanicus, oop gateshead and 40k kits. Some of the stuff I've been building on for almost 2 years :)

I'm heading down to my workshop tonite so I'll take an overview picture. And also test the loincloth.

Traditionally the loin clothes are white (sometimes depicted as cream, it varies a bit). I would suggest white (shaded with cream) for best contrast and because your bases are already a creamy/tan colour.

Google "thousand sons heresy" and click the image search and you'll see lots of pre-heresy TS GW art, HH CCG art and models people have painted.

Thx GlynG,

I have the Visions of Horus Heresy (the card game pics?) and Mister Gonzos link was also helpful. I just try to avoid pure white, so haven't decided wether to go cream with white hl or white with shade, but as you point out, my bases are a denep (some GW name?) stone I think with sepia shade, so pure white would create the most contrast (with a little shade).

Also I try to be very careful with white on red so models don't turn pinkish cause I tend to work when paint and wash is still wet. Which means I will have to be a little more patient than usual :)

Tell me about white and red! :nooo

Glad you've found the wiki link useful!

Coincidentally I have a similar colour tone for my basing in mind!
Try to represent the desert world form the first part of the 1k Sons novel.

Your warm brown/yellow can go very nicely with the red/white/gold theme of the Sons - give it a try! ;)

So got some painting done last night and took loads of pics, but since wine flowed freely amongst the merry men at my workshop, the pictures didn't turn out good and I might have to go back tonite and check up on those paintjobs ::)

But I did take a pic of 4 of the buildings with a chaos engine for scale
