There is definitely some loss of control and it makes me feel a little short-changed. I see what you mean... In SM2, you would have 10 dice, and even with some big penalties to the roll, you still might get 10 hits (or close to it). In E40k, you have 10 firepower but only get 5 dice to roll, becaus...

As far as building detachments, it kind of depends on the size of the game. I tend to build my detachments based on their SM2/TL counterparts, with an extra unit here and there. I really hate the 'mob' look of most detachments I see, and actually think throwing a bunch of random minis together actu...

Thanks, glad it helped! There are also some neat tricks to do with cavalry and jump pack infantry. These are useful units because they can more or less keep pace with vehicles in the detachment (particularly for Eldar Swooping Hawks and Warp Spiders, who have a total speed of 30cm). Cavalry have a b...

New players may also be wondering how to use the many different unit types in E40k. One of the units that is often confusing for new players is the infiltrator. So, how do you use infiltrators? Thanks to their larger deployment area, infiltrators are excellent scouts for seizing ground and revealing...

Vortex: It is 1d6 Death Ray "shots", not "hits". That means each hit could still be saved. I'm fine with this. It makes a bigger difference when used against a War Engine. Both "attacks" and "hits" can be saved. Calling them hits means they would already coun...

I was looking through the past threads and couldn't really find a good discussion on advice for new players of Epic 40,000. I've found that a lot of the strategies and tactics of the game really do not come out until you actually have a few games under your belt (just reading the rulebook is not eno...

Did anyonse else find the rules changes in Firepower 1 (pg 12-14) to be, well... A bit rubbish? When I first read them, I was instantly sold. Then I tested them out and found most of them to not add anything to the game and even, in several cases, ruin the intended feel of the game... AT Shots: Any ...

That's right, SM2 uses the Rogue Trader universe, E40k uses the 40k 2e universe and EA uses the 40k 3e+ universe.

It's interesting that you connect your Rogue Trader interest to SM2/NetEpic. I prefer E40k and 40k 2e is definitely "the" 40k universe for me.

Imperial (and CSM) supreme commander detachments are definitely smaller, but I don't think there is any limit on how many you can take (as there is for Tyranid, for example). For an Imperial force, I might take three or four in a larger game and attach them to my detachments as needed whenever they ...

Great news for eBay shoppers. I can't wait till people start dumping their 6mm stuff for the new scale. I've picked up four full Warhammer Fantasy armies (classic 90's lead!) since AOS... I feel like GW is just making it Christmas all year round for me!

I can't ever paint a metal model without paint rubbing off the corners or tips. Wow, the problem lies with either your primer, your paint or your model preperation process (or possibly all of them). I regularly tumble my models from the table onto a hard wood floor and they haven't chipped yet (the...

Appreciation of metal has struck me as becoming increasingly dated. Plastics has got to be the most common and appreciated material for serious hobby work ever? (Oh, and by hobby, I mean the actual nerdy modeling hobby scene. Not "the hobby" in GW-speak ) And about the scale bump, it seem...

You know, the most obvious solution just slapped me in the face. Since Epic 40k is explicit that each detachment represents a single Warhammer 40k army, and each assault represents a single game of Warhammer 40k, why not just set a point limit for detachments? A typical game of Warhammer 40k 2nd Edi...

I have always agreed with this. Makes no sense why the makers would allow players to create a detachment that could single handedlly contain one Captain, one Librarian, 10 Tactical units, and 10 Land Raiders all in the same group. Oh you could do a lot worse than that, even with Space Marines. The ...
